Kind of forgot this bowl existed. Started this bowl in October of last year before the Orr Reed Architectural Co. Fall show, the bark pocket going all of the way through the bottom of the bowl made it more complicated than I had time to deal with before the show. In the process of prepping for the Spring show on the 18th I came across this WIP and decided to knock it out the rest of the way. Maple Burl with genuine Turquoise inlay, this bow still needs to be polished with Yorkshire Grit abrasive paste, but it will be available at the show on the 18th.

Roughly 5 years ago I made my first lidded box on the lathe, this week I revisited making lidded boxes in preparation for the show at Orr Reed Wrecking Co.

Which do you prefer, the new more refined design, or the old more rustic style?

Triple-dyed maple burl is basically controlled chaos. You never really know what you’re going to get until the very end.

This one came out louder than most.

Is this your kind of chaos, or do you prefer something more subtle?

This beautiful piece of camatillo is fresh off the lathe. It polished to such a high shine that I'm having a hard time getting a good picture through the light reflecting off the surface.

I can't make up my mind which hardware pairs with it the best.

Which one would you put on it?

This started as a rough amboyna burl pen blank. It had cracks, voids, and no guarantees.

After about an hour on the lathe, it became something completely different.

It's the same piece of wood.

Does this surprise you?

This one has been hiding in our pen binder for over a year.

It’s a twist-style cigar pen made from double-dyed maple burl, and somehow it never found a home — even though every blank like this turns out completely different.

I pulled it back out today and forgot how much movement there is in this grain.

Be honest… would you actually use something like this every day, or keep it on a desk just to look at?

Fresh off the lathe from last night's live on TikTok. Double dyed Maple burl from the PNW on gunmetal cigar hardware. Comes with a standard Parker Style ink cartridge, but is compatible with a number of different ink cartridges including gel and rollerball. $75+S&H

This curly Maple is another piece that came from NW Imperial Hardwoods and still images just don't do it justice. "Curly" also called flame or tiger refers to chatoyancy in the wood grain, typically perpendicular to the wood grain. This pattern can be caused by a number of different genetic and environmental factors making it more common in certain species of trees while almost never occurring in other species. Nevertheless curly figure in wood has been highly coveted amongst woodworkers of all types for centuries and is a beautiful natural embellishment of the wood. This bowl is roughly 9 1/2" wide and 3" deep, it has been finished with Mahoney's Walnut Oil and polished with Yorkshire Grit making it food and liquid safe.
