A Rare Piece of Hobby History

At Tourdot Enterprises, we love discovering pieces of sports card history that many collectors have never seen before.

This is an original promotional poster issued by MastroNet Inc. Premier Auctions for their December 2002 Sports & Americana Premier Catalog Auction, featuring what was promoted as the 1952 Topps Baseball Card Complete Set – All 407 Cards PSA Graded NM-MT 8. The poster highlights one of the most iconic complete sets ever assembled, including legendary Hall of Famers such as Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, P*e Wee Reese, Gil Hodges, Eddie Mathews, and Roy Campanella.

What makes this piece especially interesting is its rarity. These promotional posters are virtually never seen on the open market. Auction records are scarce to nonexistent, likely because so few were produced and most have remained tucked away in private hobby collections. A friend recently brought this fact to my attention, making me appreciate this piece even more.

I did not purchase this poster. It was issued by MastroNet in 2002 as a promotional item, and I have been its sole owner ever since. For nearly 24 years, it has spent most of its life protected in a poster sleeve. As shown in the close-up photos, there are a few minor imperfections from age and handling, but it remains a remarkable survivor from one of the hobby’s most memorable auctions.

After decades of collecting and selling vintage sports cards and memorabilia through Tourdot Enterprises, I’ve learned that one of the greatest joys in this hobby is continuing to uncover items that even longtime collectors have never encountered. I’m now ready to part with this treasure and would love to learn more about its history.

Heading into the weekend, forgot to mention another great show at the NC Fairgrounds a couple a weeks ago. Our posse, myself Taylor and Doug were all back together for a great time as always. I absolutely hate that picture with us, I’m getting old and bent, also showing off a couple of my crazy show shirts. My friends Stacy and his wife Marikay Cooley stopped by to see me and she is showing off a copy of my wife’s book that she picked up. Also displaying a few of my recent finds: The Banks rookie is heading off to my good friend Bill Boerst in Tacoma soon, as a Chicago native I know he has been wanting the card forever. Found an inexpensive ‘52 High number at the show and it’s already been claimed. Also showing off some non-sport beauties I acquired: Our lovely local Hollywood legend, Smithfield, NC native, Ava Gardner. Also a card of Western movie Star Allan “Rocky” Lane. He was Mentioned in one of my favorite Statler Brothers songs “Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott”. And another claim to fame for Mr. Lane was he was the voice of Mr. Ed! “Well Wilbur”

Heading out to Asheville at the Asheville Mall this weekend! Was a killer show in February hoping that lightning will strike twice again!

Was at the nice Wicker Center in Sanford, NC, the gem of Lee County this past Saturday. Attired in what I call my Picasso shirt. Nice little show, picked up a couple of bangers in a trade: 1954T Jackie Robinson and a 1954B Willie Mays. Will be back at the NC Fairgrounds this weekend. Hope to see you out there!

Last weekend I was at the Huge extravaganza at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center in Concord, NC. Another tremendous event by James and Shannon of SportsWax Promotions, they brought in HOFer Allen Iverson. Tremendous show was able to pick up what would be in the Top 5 football cards in the hobby, the Rookie Card of the legendary Jim Brown - 1958 Topps, who I consider the GOAT of the running backs. Haven’t had one in quite awhile as it has its value has escalated tremendously. While not in high grade is a beautiful example of a highly collectible mid grade card, doesn’t have the “snow” on the card that often plagues the black background on this card.
