Today we honor the life and legacy of John Lewis on the 6th anniversary of his passing. Lewis was a champion of civil rights in the United States and played a key role in the movement to end legalized racial segregation. Among his many achievements and contributions, John Lewis:

•Was a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and served as its Chairman from 1963-66,
•Worked as one of the lead organizers for the 1963 March on Washington,
•Led the first Selma to Montgomery March in March 1965 across the Edmund Pettis Bridge, that later became known as Bloody Sunday, where state troopers and police attacked the peaceful marchers,
•Served as member of Congress in Georgia's 5th district for over 30 years,
•Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.

As we continue the fight to protect and expand voting rights for all in the United States, we take inspiration from John Lewis and his lifelong dedication to peace, justice, and equality for all.
