🌿 What am I doing at The Herb Cottage today?
It’s harvest time here in the Smokies!! 🍂🌿

As September winds down in Gatlinburg, the temperatures are beginning to drop, and some of our herbs are telling me it’s time to start bringing in the harvest. Weather permitting, I can often leave herbs growing a little longer, but once I start seeing browning and dieback, I'd rather gather them while there’s still plenty of beautiful, aromatic growth to preserve.
So today, I am harvesting rosemary, mint, and lemon balm and after the past rain, I'm foraging Usnea, better known as “Old Man’s Beard.”

I'm cutting healthy green growth, bundling it, and letting it dry for later use. And that unmistakable rosemary smell? That's one of our favorite scents of fall here at the Cottage.

🍂 This is what seasonal herbalism looks like.
I watch the plants. I watch the weather. I harvest when they're ready. And when foraging, I try to leave the woods looking as though we were never there.

The plants usually let you know when it's time. 💚

I get asked this ALL the time:

“Where do you order your herbs and mushrooms?”

Order them?! 😂

Y’all, I live in the Great Smoky Mountains before that I grew up in the Virgina Mountains. My dad would pick berries and mint right off the stem or sour grass and chew on it. Spit on to***co for stings. Our mountains, fields, forests, creek banks, and hollers are overflowing with plants that people have used for generations.

God already provided the apothecary and before there were websites, catalogs, supplement aisles, and overnight shipping, there were plants.

Blackberry
Elderberry
Poke berries
Morel
Turkey tail
Gumballs
And so, so many more!!

They grow from the ground, along our fences, beside our creeks, throughout our woods and you were probably taught not to touch them or they are just weeds or even poisonous.

The heart of what I do is right here!! Our home!! In our mountains!! From the original supplier!! 🙏

Herbal medicine didn't begin in one place, and it certainly doesn't belong to one culture alone.

People often talk about Traditional Chinese Medicine, and it has a rich, well-documented history. But herbal knowledge has also existed for thousands of years in Indigenous cultures across the Americas, Africa, Europe, India, the Middle East, and countless other places long before modern pharmaceuticals.

I grew up in the Great Smoky Mountains. My great-grandmother was Mohawk from a reservation in Canada, and another of my grandmothers was from the mountains of southwest Virginia. The knowledge I was raised with came from both of those family lines. Some of it was passed down through my Indigenous ancestors, and some through Appalachian mountain folk who learned to live from the land. Those traditions didn't come from one source they developed over generations of observing, respecting, and understanding the plants that grew where our people lived.

Every culture that lived closely with nature developed its own healing traditions. Different plants, different climates, different histories but the same human desire to heal and care for one another. That's the beauty of herbal medicine!!

Many people see sweetgum "gumballs" as nothing more than oofs and ouchies in the yard, but they are extremely useful in many ways!!!

And tis the time to prepare for the upcoming flu season!! So avoid the poison 💉 and run right now and collect your gumballs to make homemade "tamiflu"!!

Even though we don't understand the point of the spikes God reminds us that he created plants with purpose and has provided abundantly!!

To my amazing community,

I wanted to share an update regarding one of my store locations. For the time being, the Sevierville shop will be temporarily closed to the public and will primarily be used for inventory, stock, storage, orders, office work, and behind-the-scenes operations.

As many of you know, I’m not only running a small growing business, I’m also raising 7 children, ages 4-20, all while their dad proudly serves our country. Our family schedule is nonstop, and the most important thing to me is my children. They will always come first and right now my presence is the most important thing to them as we reach the end of the school year between prom, field days, awards, summer camps, summer jobs, etc.

Unfortunately, as a small growing business, I simply can't afford the expected staffing cost these days or trust that people will actually work and I can't be in two shops and everywhere my kids need me at the same time.

This decision was not made lightly, but family has to come first.

That said, I am still fully dedicated to serving our community and online sales. Our Gatlinburg location remains open, and if any locals are needing or wanting something, I am more than happy to bring items down from the Gatlinburg shop whenever possible. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’ll continue doing everything I can to take care of our customers and community to the best of my ability! I love and care about you all!!
