The K’zoo weekend has concluded. I presented my scholarship every year there from 2009-2019, and it was really fun to come back as Mobilis Books to exhibit and share my ideas for tracking binding waste and for teaching book history across disciplines.

Here’s a smattering of images from the weekend. Medieval cookies; medieval housing; me with some chain mail; my friend Matthieu Boyd’s book in the wild; the large cart hauling my books; the even larger Jeep GRAND Cherokee hauling my books; the tenuous peace I came to with the Jeep GRAND Cherokee; sky dogs; and finally, the 10th (?) year of visiting on the road to Kalamazoo.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, friends old and new. Thanks especially to for helping me with the booth & being my companion for the past decade. ❤️ now, as my Garmin has suggested I will “let [my] body rest”.

This weekend was a fury (or flurry?) of books books books and a few friends. As a long time lurker, this was my first time exhibiting in New York with . Mobilis Books got to collaborate with a Brooklyn-based contemporary artist, , whose creepy sculptures complimented the spooky books collection.

We’ve accomplished our goal of putting rare and interesting books into hands, hearts, and collections. We’re now slouching back to Florida… for now.

And that’s the gist of the long history of the book, and our role as custodians & stewards of material culture, written on a paste down.

I walked into an auction house in South Cerney (iykyk) and walked out with an obsession for Peter Apian’s Cosmographia. A couple months later, I acquired one of the many 16th century recensions for Mobilis Books.

A couple years later, I’ve written a thesis using the Four Field approach, focusing on historical archaeology, to argue that this Renaissance textbook can contribute to research in Archaeology, Linguistics, Cultural, and Biological Anthropology for my second MA through in the .

I’ll defend that thesis tomorrow.

And I’m always out here, advocating for the interdisciplinary potential of Special Collections and rare books & trying to put interesting books into hands, hearts, and collections.

Fine books for fine people

Mobilis Books is unveiling a great deal of brand new (old) spooky books on ghosts, seances, UFOs, and self published weirdo lit. We’ve also brought a selection of important text fragments of medieval manuscripts, pretty leaves, and a binding waste example with a bit of unattested Martin Luther. Can’t wait to show you the goods.

Come out tomorrow (10-5) and Sunday (10-4) to the Coliseum in St Petersburg (Florida obv)

1545 psalter printed by the best documented of early female printers— Charlotte Guillard of Paris.

Charlotte Guillard was not the first woman ever to work in printing, but she was the first woman printer in France whose career is significantly documented. Her output was notable for its scholarly focus: most of her editions were theological, legal, or humanist works in Latin and Greek intended for an academic and clerical readership rather than popular devotional texts or chivalric romances. After the death of her second husband, Claude Chevallon, in 1537 she printed at least 158 editions under her own name, often using the Latin feminine form Excudebat Carola Guillard to assert her authorship, which we see as the colophon of this book.

If you’re in St Petersburg, FL, March 7-8 and fancy some fine and rare books, come by.

Mobilis Books will be exhibiting. We’ve been processing a new acquisition of ~1500 spooky books from a private collector which have not seen the market in several decades. The collection is primarily spiritualism, ghosts, paranormal, mediums & séances from the 19th & 20th centuries— with some UFOs, conspiracy theories, and absolutely weirdo-lit as a treat.

We’ll be debuting several shelves worth of these books at the fair, alongside our other specialisms: medieval manuscripts, medievalism, and 19th century publishers’ bindings.
