If YOU were the Sheriff of Saluda County for ONE DAY, what would you do first?

🗺️ Ever wonder if there are others out there like us? You know, towns with hyphenated names?

The hyphen is used when neighboring towns merge and refuse to give up their names. While hyphenated town names are rare in the U.S., a few places take the compromise to a whole new level. Are we on that list?

🏡So how did we get our hyphen? Because citizens were deeply proud of their respective local histories, choosing a brand-new name or favoring one town's name over the other would have killed the merger before it even reached a vote. The hyphen acted as a literal and symbolic bridge between the "friendly twins."

Our community was already culturally accustomed to sharing a hyphenated identity. The two towns had built a consolidated Batesburg-Leesville High School all the way back in the 1920s and established a joint Batesburg-Leesville Chamber of Commerce in 1946.

When full political consolidation finally won at the ballot box in 1992, keeping the hyphenated name simply formalized how the communities had already been working together for decades. It closed the 100-yard gap between the two towns.

What about the others out there?
🏙️ Winston-Salem, North Carolina takes the cake as one of the most well known “hyphens” and is the only core city in the United States with a population over 100,000 that features a hyphenated name.

🏆 The reigning heavyweights: When looking at official census-designated places, California takes the crown with a 30-character tie between Bonadelle Ranchos-Madera Ranchos and Fetters Hot Springs-Agua Caliente. Texas barely missed the top spot with Encantada-Ranchito-El Calaboz at 29 characters—bonus points for using two separate hyphens!

🏛️ The incorporated city champion: If you count only officially incorporated cities and towns, the record belongs to Arkansas. Coming in at 17 characters, Helena-West Helena took the title after two neighboring Mississippi River communities merged their identities rather than pick a brand-new name.

📜 The historic heavy hitters: Over in Maryland and Texas, classic geography took inspiration from English naming traditions. Historic spots like Winchester-on-the-Severn and Washington-on-the-Brazos each clock in at 21 characters, sounding more like grand royal estates than small American communities.

✍️ Spare a thought for the locals filling out paperwork: Imagine having to squeeze 30 letters onto a government form or an envelope return address every single day. Batesburg-Leesville only has 18 letters.

😱My biggest fear when typing our hyphenated town name? A typo occurs and it becomes Batesburg-Lessville.

TRAFFIC STOP 101: A GUIDE FOR NEW DRIVERS

New to driving? Seeing blue lights behind you for the first time can be a little nerve-racking. Knowing what to do ahead of time can help make the experience easier and safer for everyone.

• Pull over safely as soon as you can.
• Put your vehicle in park and stay inside unless asked to step out.
• Keep your hands where the deputy can see them.
• At night, turn on your interior light.
• Have your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance available.
• If you need to reach for something, let the deputy know where it is before reaching.
• Stay calm, be respectful, and listen to the deputy’s instructions.

New drivers, remember: Being pulled over doesn’t automatically mean you’re getting a ticket. Traffic stops are part of driving, and knowing how to handle one can make a big difference.

Parents, this is also a great conversation to have with your new driver before they find themselves in this situation.

A little patience and communication can help make a traffic stop safer and easier for everyone involved.
