💙 What Does Support Really Look Like When Working With Individuals With Disabilities? 💙
Supporting an individual with a disability is so much more than simply doing things for them. It’s about creating opportunities to do things with them and, whenever possible, allowing them to do things for themselves and ensuring growth.
✨ Support means patience.
Everyone learns at their own pace. Give the person time to process, learn, and try.
✨ Support means listening.
Ask what they want, what they need, and how they prefer to be supported. Their voice matters.
✨ Support means teaching, not taking over.
Sometimes the best help is stepping back and allowing someone to try—even if it takes longer or isn’t done exactly the way you would do it.
✨ Support means encouragement.
Celebrate progress, effort, independence, and accomplishments—big and small.
✨ Support means dignity and respect.
Speak to adults like adults. Avoid talking over someone, making assumptions, or treating a disability as the most important thing about a person.
✨ Support means consistency.
Clear expectations, routines, communication, and reliable people can make a huge difference.
✨ Support means seeing the person first.
Every individual has strengths, preferences, goals, dreams, challenges, and a unique personality.
At the end of the day, good support isn’t about controlling someone’s life. It’s about helping create the tools, opportunities, and confidence they need to have as much choice, independence, and inclusion as possible. 💙
