Where the Sweet Potatoes Are Royalty and the People Are Just Plain Nuts! 😂
Once upon a time, deep in the piney woods of East Texas, there was a little town called Gilmer, Texas.
Now, most towns celebrate things like their founding fathers, historical battles, or famous people.
NOT GILMER! 😂
Nope! We looked down at the dirt, pulled out a sweet potato, and said...
"BY GOLLY, WE'RE GONNA THROW A WHOLE FESTIVAL FOR THIS THING!" 🍠🤣
And just like that, a legend was born!
Now, before you start thinking we've completely lost our minds, there's actually a pretty good reason behind all this yam madness!
Sweet potato farming in the Gilmer area faced severe disruptions from weevil infestations as early as the late 1920s, which forced local crop quarantines before the community later celebrated its recovery.
Bit in the 1930s, sweet potatoes were an important crop for farmers in Upshur County.
Those hardworking folks depended on their crops to help support their families and the local economy.
So in 1935, the East Texas Yamboree was born, celebrating the sweet potato industry and bringing the community together.
And apparently, somebody decided that simply EATING sweet potatoes wasn't enough.
WE NEEDED A QUEEN, A PARADE, A CARNIVAL, AND A WHOLE LOT OF FRIED FOOD! 👑🎡🤣
Because that's how we do things in East Texas!
Think about it...
Other towns crown beauty queens.
WE CROWN A YAMBOREE QUEEN! 👑
Other towns have little neighborhood gatherings.
WE SHUT DOWN STREETS AND INVITE EVERYBODY AND THEIR COUSIN! 😂
And if you've ever attended the Yamboree, you already know three things are guaranteed:
🍠 You're going to eat something you probably shouldn't.
🍠 You're going to run into at least 47 people you know.
🍠 And you're going to spend half the day trying to figure out where in the world you parked your truck! 🤣
But underneath all the laughter, there's something pretty special about this tradition.
For generations, the East Texas Yamboree has brought families, farmers, businesses, and neighbors together.
It's about remembering our agricultural roots, honoring the hardworking people who helped build this community, and celebrating the small-town spirit that makes Gilmer so special.
And let's face it...
It takes a special kind of Texas town to turn a sweet potato into a ROYAL CELEBRITY! 🍠👑😂
So here's to Gilmer, Texas!
Where the yams are sweet, the people are sweeter, and the stories get a little bigger every time they're told!
