FlukeGuard: When You Need a Stronger Approach to Flukes.
Aqua Prazi is our first recommendation for fluke treatment and it works extremely well in most situations. But occasionally koi keepers run into cases where flukes persist — repeat infestations, stubborn cases that do not fully resolve, or situations where a different treatment approach is needed. That is where FlukeGuard comes in.
FlukeGuard offers an alternative active ingredient for fluke treatment, giving you a second option when you need it. Having both in your arsenal means you are not left without a solution if one treatment does not get the job done completely.
A few situations where FlukeGuard makes sense:
You have treated with Aqua Prazi and are still seeing flashing or gill irritation after the recommended treatment period.
You are dealing with a new fish introduction and want a different treatment protocol for quarantine.
You have a history of persistent fluke problems in your pond and want to rotate treatments.
The goal is always healthy fish. Sometimes that means having more than one tool available. Knowing when to use each one is part of being a prepared koi keeper.
Shop FlukeGuard at the link in bio or ask us in the comments if you have questions about which treatment is right for your situation.

Your Koi Are Talking to You. Are You Listening?
One of the most valuable skills a koi keeper can develop has nothing to do with water chemistry or medications. It is simply learning to read your fish. Koi communicate through behavior, and once you know what to look for, you can catch problems early — sometimes before they become serious.
Here is a quick guide to what common behaviors actually mean:
Flashing or rubbing against rocks or the pond bottom — This is your fish trying to scratch an itch. External parasites like flukes or fish lice are usually the cause. Do not ignore this.
Clamped fins — Fins held tight against the body are a stress signal. Could be parasites, poor water quality, or the early stages of illness. Investigate immediately.
Jumping — Occasional jumping can be normal, but repeated jumping is often a sign of skin irritation from parasites or water quality issues.
Lethargy or sitting on the bottom — A fish that is not moving with the group or is sitting on the bottom is telling you something is wrong. Check your water parameters first, then consider parasites or bacterial infection.
Gasping at the surface — Usually an oxygen or gill issue. Check aeration, water temperature, and consider gill flukes.
Loss of appetite — One of the first signs that something is off. A fish that stops eating is worth watching closely.
The key is knowing what is normal for your pond. Spend a few minutes each day just watching your fish. It is the cheapest and most effective diagnostic tool you have.

Flukes Are Already in Your Pond. Here Is How to Deal With Them.
If your koi are flashing, rubbing against rocks, or showing rapid gill movement, there is a good chance flukes are the culprit. Gill flukes and body flukes are among the most common parasites koi keepers deal with every spring — and they are often present before you ever see obvious symptoms.
The tricky part is that by the time your fish look visibly stressed, the infestation can already be significant. This is why early spring treatment makes such a difference.
Aqua Prazi has been the gold standard for fluke treatment in the koi hobby for years. It is highly effective against both gill and body flukes, easy to dose, and safe for your fish and your filter bacteria when used as directed.
If you are seeing any of these signs, do not wait:
Flashing or rubbing against surfaces
Rapid or labored gill movement
Excess mucus on the body
Lethargy or loss of appetite
Clamped fins
Spring is the time to treat. Waiting until summer means treating already-stressed fish in warmer, lower-oxygen water. Get ahead of it now.
Shop Aqua Prazi at the link in bio or ask us in the comments if you have questions about your treatment protocol.

Spring Pond Startup Checklist — Don't Skip Step 4.
Every spring we see the same mistakes. Keepers rush to get their ponds going and end up dealing with sick fish by May. Follow this checklist and start your season right:
Step 1 — Check your filter. Clean or replace filter media that sat dormant all winter. Beneficial bacteria may need to be reestablished.
Step 2 — Do a partial water change. Fresh, dechlorinated water before your fish become fully active.
Step 3 — Test your water. Check ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH before you do anything else.
Step 4 — Observe your fish before feeding. Watch for flashing, rubbing, clamped fins, or lethargy. Parasites wake up before your koi do. Treat if needed.
Step 5 — Resume feeding slowly. Only when water temps are consistently above 55 degrees. Start with a wheat germ diet.
Step 6 — Check your aeration. Make sure pumps and aerators are running properly heading into warmer months.
Save this post and share it with a fellow pond keeper who needs it.
What step do you always forget? Tell us in the comments.

Your Koi's Health Follows Your Thermometer.
Most pond keepers watch the calendar. Smart pond keepers watch the thermometer. Here's what's actually happening to your koi at each key temperature milestone:
Below 50°F — Koi metabolism is very slow. Stop feeding. Their digestive system can't process food properly and uneaten food will foul your water.
50–55°F — Parasites begin waking up before your koi's immune system does. This is the danger window. Start observing your fish closely.
55–65°F — Koi become more active. Resume feeding lightly with a wheat germ based diet. Begin your spring treatment protocol.
65°F+ — Full feeding can resume. Immune system is stronger. Normal pond management kicks back in.
The biggest mistake we see every spring? Keepers who go by the date instead of the temp. A warm February can move that danger window up by weeks.
Get a quality pond thermometer if you don't have one. It's the cheapest piece of equipment that makes the biggest difference.
What's your water temp sitting at right now? Drop it in the comments.

Water temps are rising — and so is the danger.
As your pond climbs through the 50s°F this month, parasites that have been dormant all winter are waking up and looking for a host. Gill flukes, body flukes, and other external parasites become active before most koi keepers even think to look for them.
The problem? Your koi's immune system is still sluggish from winter. They're vulnerable before they're strong enough to fight back.
This is the window that separates healthy ponds from sick ones.
What to look for:
🔸 Flashing or rubbing against rocks
🔸 Clamped fins
🔸 Lethargy or loss of appetite
🔸 Jumping or unusual surface behavior
If you're seeing any of this, it's time to act. Terminate has been the go-to treatment for koi keepers for years — effective, trusted, and easy to dose.

When it matters, this is what we use.

For the last 3 years, H2O Neutralizer has been used to manage water quality in the koi show tanks at the All American Koi Show — along with several other major shows across the country.

H2O Neutralizer did the binding, but the results don’t happen by accident.

Andy Moo of Andrew’s Koi Andrew's Koi Internationall monitored each individual tank, tested continuously, and applied H2O Neutralizer precisely where and when it was needed.

That’s the reality of show tanks:
• Fish are placed once and remain in their tanks
• Water volume is limited
• There’s no margin for error
• Stability matters more than anything

H2O Neutralizer is a true full-spectrum water conditioner:
• Detoxifies chlorine & chloramine
• Binds ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate
• pH-neutral
• Extremely concentrated (a little goes a long way)
• Safe for koi, goldfish, plants, and biofilters

We use it in new ponds, water changes, quarantine tanks, emergency situations — and in professional show tanks, where every detail is visible and every mistake shows.

If it can perform there, it can perform in your pond.

Sedating a Koi – The Right Way

In this short video, I show how easy it is to safely sedate a koi, perform an exam or treatment, and then wake the fish back up normally.

Sedation is useful for:
• Slime coat scrapes and microscope exams
• Wound care and topical treatments
• Measuring, photographing, or handling koi without stress
• Reducing the risk of injury to both the fish and the handler

Using the right sedative at the correct dose allows the koi to relax, remain calm, and recover smoothly when placed back into clean, well-aerated water.

This demonstration was done using Aqua Meds® SedateSafe, designed specifically for koi and goldfish and safe when used as directed.

If you’ve ever been hesitant to sedate a koi, this video shows just how simple and controlled the process can be.
