Stuff we Love: Liquid Plant Foods from Espoma

We’ve talked before about Espoma’s family of granular “Tone” products, like Holly-Tone and Tomato-Tone, but did you know they have a line of liquid plant food as well?!

Designed for indoor and outdoor use, these plant foods are crafted from natural and organic ingredients in Espoma’s solar-powered facility right over the bridge in New Jersey. Their liquid form ensures quick nutrient intake, helping to promote stronger growth, greener leaves, and more vibrant blooms. Grow! is the ultimate all-purpose plant food, whereas Cactus!, Orchid!, and Violet! have specially formulated NPK’s and cater to those plants’ unique root sensitivities.

The best way to improve is to get feedback on your performance, right? So we put together the Wedgewood Gardens Spring Survey annually in an effort to see how we did each year through the eyes of our patrons.

In Bloom at The Wedge: Celosia

Celosia is a warm-weather annual with tall, spiky flowers, dense feathery plumes, and bizarre brain coral-like blooms in vibrant hot pinks, sunshine yellows and deep fuchsias. Blooming all summer, you’ll see these guys as the tall bold spikes in planters, giving dimension to garden beds, and even in cut flower bouquets this time of year.

There are two varieties of Celosia - Plumed Celosia has feathery, upright, and wispy blooms that look like colorful flames or soft paintbrushes. Crested Celosia, commonly known as Cockscomb, sports dense, compact, and folded buds that look like twisted velvet, coral, or (get this…) those fleshy red crests on the tops of chicken heads!

Celosia grows best in full sun with at least six hours of sunlight daily - the more sun it gets the more blooms it will have! Celosia can grow 6 to 36 inches tall and spread up to 24 inches wide depending on the variety, so make sure it’s got room to grow. Water it regularly, but allow the soil to dry between waterings and avoid overwatering. Celosia benefit from a high-nitrogen fertilizer once a month while they’re blooming in the summer.

Fall plants are here!

Believe it or not, it’s time to start replacing some of those tired and spent-looking spring and summer annuals with some that are more cold-tolerant. Our fresh batch of Petchoas, Calibrachoa, Verbena, Lantana and Salvia (all of which typically don’t show signs of stress until temps dip to the mid-high 30's) are ready for the job! We’ve even started bringing out some more classic fall crops like Celosia and Ornamental Peppers!

August is a month dedicated to transition at The Wedge, where you’ll notice we’ve slowly started replacing spring and summer plants and decor with some that are more fall-fitting. Stop by and admire what’s new - all the colors of the echinaceas. Impeccably healthy hard-to-find houseplants. A fresh restock of impressive caladium. Rudbeckia blooming up to 6 feet high! And have you ever seen a hydrangea in a hanging basket?! 🤯

Plant Spotlight: Tillandsia, aka Air Plants

Air plants (Tillandsia) are a super resilient class of bromeliads found in varied habitats around the world. They are goofy in that they don't have long nutrient-absorbing roots like other plants - they only have a few short ones meant to help hold them onto whatever surface they're on! Bromeliads actually get all the nutrients they need through specialized, tiny, hair-like scales on their leaves called trichomes. Pretty cool huh?

Tillandsia are extremely low-maintenance plants that don’t require much above bright indirect light and a weekly soak. Pop them in water for 5-10 minutes, shake them off and let them drain before putting them back on display. They don’t need special temperatures or humidity levels, generally won’t benefit from fertilizing, and are very rarely affected by pests. Extra easy-peasy!

Pro Tip: When watering your tillandsia, make sure there isn't water pooled in the crown, which may lead to rot, and we wouldn’t want that!

In Bloom at The Wedge: Cardinal Flower

Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is a cheery perennial in the bellflower family (Campanulaceae) which boasts brilliant red blooms from late summer into mid-fall. It is native to the eastern United States, is cherished by bees and butterflies, and is irresistible to ruby-throated hummingbirds.

Cardinal flower is naturally found in rich, moist locations like the edges of streams or ponds, but can adapt to drier conditions in the landscape as long as it’s not completely dry for long periods of time. Amend the soil with some fresh compost when planting, and keep it well watered until established. Cardinal flower does well in part shade but won’t likely reach its full potential (4-5 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide) unless it’s getting full sun. It has few pests and is not favored by deer or rabbits, so what’s not to love?!

Fun Fact: This vibrant beauty earned its nickname when it was introduced to Europe back in the mid-1620s. It didn’t take long for people to notice the scarlet, crimson, and vermilion blooms perfectly matched the bright red robes worn by Roman Catholic cardinals!

Plant Spotlight: Sempervivum, aka Hens & Chicks

Sempervivum is a group of succulents that are easy to grow and low maintenance. They’ve earned the nickname “Hens and Chicks” because of the rosette shape and habit of the plant to produce numerous babies. They can be found in a host of hues, and many varieties produce star-shaped flowers in pink, red, or occasionally yellow.

Due to the Sempervivum’s hardiness and drought tolerance, they can be grown in many different places from indoors to outdoors, in cool or hot temperatures. They are low growing and adaptable to most soils but prefer full sun and a well-draining medium. Sempervivum growing conditions are only limited by good drainage and sunlight. They’re deer- and rabbit-resistant too!

Hens and Chicks are perennials in our area. In fact, they’ll stick around until temperatures dip into the 30’s, and will re-emerge as soon as temps warm back up again next spring. Join us on Saturday, August 22nd for our Kokedama Workshop! We’re offering this class at 11am and 2pm, so you can choose to attend the one that fits your schedule.

Houseplant enthusiast and Wedgewood Retail Assistant Manager Justin Dampman will lead an engaging hands-on workshop where you will learn the technique and make your own! Kokedama is a centuries-old Japanese form of garden art closely tied to the practice of bonsai. It involves using a moss ball as the support and focal point for a tree, shrub, or plant. The plant’s roots are wrapped in a ball of soil which is then covered with moss.

We’ll have all the parts you need - the beautiful plants, the nutrient-rich moss, and the knowledgeable team to guide you - all you need to bring are your hands! Whether you're a seasoned plant geek or just looking to try something new, this workshop is perfect for plant lovers of all skill levels.

In Bloom at The Wedge: Agastache, aka Hummingbird Mint

While tricky to pronounce, this prolific herbaceous perennial is well-loved for its long blooming period and ability to lure all kinds of pollinators. Its foliage has a minty, herby fragrance, and blooms in a wide range of vivid colors from light pink to deep purple, blue, red, orange, and even white.

Agastache is native to the plains and prairies of North America, so its care should mimic that of the desert. It needs full sun and is ideal for one of those spots that gets daily hot sun for hours. It is draught-tolerant and should be watered occasionally but deeply, and doesn’t need high humidity or fertilizer to thrive. The cherry on top is that agastache is deer-resistant and rabbit-resistant!

Once established, agastache does not need much care and it will reliably come back every year, but it will act like an annual when grown in rich, fertile soils with too much water and fertilizer. It will grow and flower beautifully initially, but probably won’t make it through the winter.

Fun Fact: The name "agastache" is derived from the Greek and essentially means a very large ear of grain, referring to the abundant flower spikes.
