In Bloom at The Wedge: Celosia

Celosia is a show-stopping annual with tall, spiky flowers, dense feathery plumes, and bizarre brain coral-like blooms in vibrant hot pinks, sunshine yellows and deep fuchsias. You’ll see these guys as the tall bold spikes in fall planters, giving dimension to garden beds, and even in cut flower bouquets this time of year.

There are two varieties of Celosia - Plumed Celosia has feathery, upright, and wispy blooms that look like colorful flames or soft paintbrushes. Crested Celosia, commonly known as Cockscomb, sports dense, compact, and folded buds that look like twisted velvet, coral, or (get this…) those fleshy red crests on the tops of chicken heads!

Celosia grows best in full sun with at least six hours of sunlight daily - the more sun it gets the more blooms it will have. Celosia can grow 6 to 36 inches tall and spread up to 24 inches wide depending on the variety, so make sure it’s got room to grow. Water it regularly, but allow the soil to dry between waterings and avoid overwatering.

Today's the day! Please join us this evening for another amazing Wedgewood Plant Swap!

Plant Swaps are a great way to upcycle and give your houseplants a second chance to thrive. Bring some cuttings, extra growers pots, pottery, etc. and swap them out for something else, all while knowing they will be well taken care of in a new home.

We like to keep things stress-free here at The Wedge, so here’s how our Plant Swaps work. When you arrive please set what you’ve brought on the tables we’ve provided and take the time to mingle and check out what others have offered. If you’ve brought something more valuable or meaningful you may hold on to it and engage others in conversations about trading. At 6:00 we will pull everyone together to give the official “go-ahead” and at that point you may pick up what you’ve had your eyes on. Around 6:30 we will pull the raffle winners (you must be present to win!).

Just a few rules:
1. Plants must be pest free.
2. Plants must be labeled to the best of your knowledge.
3. If self-sewn, seeds must be in a bag or envelope labeled with the plant name, plant type, flower color (if applicable), and date sewn.
4. Please be respectful to others and refrain from hovering or “claiming” items prior to the official go-ahead.
5. Please only take what you can take care of or will use.

Our staff will be here sharing plant advice, and answering your plant questions. Our retail shop will be open for purchases, we will be doing some sweet raffles, and we’ll have some plant deals good only at the Swap!

Not sure what we’re talking about? The Philly Plant Crawl is a great way to explore the city’s best plant shops and familiarize yourself with amazing local spots you may not know exist. This year was its second year, taking place from September 17th through the 20th, and a whopping 16 shops took part. Each of us had our own Crawl-specific specials and/or raffles, and we even collaborated to put together a HUGE basket for the Crawl’s Grand Prize (huge congrats to our Grand Prize winner, Nicolette Medeiros!!)!

If you’re interested in taking part in a future Crawl, you need to be following on Instagram to stay informed. Trust us, it’s worth it!

Plant Spotlight: ZZ Plant

Here at The Wedge we almost always use latin names to refer to specific plants, but this one is a rare exception because, we admit, only a few of us can pronounce ‘Zamioculcas zamiifolia’! 🤭

ZZ plants are very low-maintenance tropical houseplants, growing smooth, naturally shiny bright lime green leaves that mature to an emerald green or almost black color. They spring from thick stalks, which grow from large, water-storing rhizomes hidden just underneath the soil.

The ZZ is a highly dependable houseplant because it thrives on neglect! It prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate low light conditions, and should be watered only when the soil is completely dry. Those underground rhizomes store water, so don’t overwater it and make sure the soil is well-draining so it doesn’t become bacteria soup. Average home temperatures and humidity levels are perfect, and ZZ’s are generally pest-free!

Think about that dark-ish spot in your place that could use a little greenery. Would a ZZ plant look good there? We’ve got ZZ’s in 4.5” pots, as well as large floor plants in stock right now so stop by soon!

In Bloom at The Wedge: Goldenrod, aka Solidago

One of the most welcome sights in the end-of-summer landscape are fields of tall flower plumes blazing brightly like vibrant golden-yellow flames. This is Solidago, known commonly as Goldenrod, and it’s a tough, low-maintenance native perennial that carries a huge ecological benefit.

Solidago is a great fall addition to any garden, as it blooms just as many other summer-flowering perennials are fading. Thriving with minimal care, it prefers full sun but some varieties can thrive in part shade too. Solidago tolerates our native clay soil as long as it is reasonably well-draining, is rarely troubled by insects or diseases, and doesn’t need any supplement fertilizing. It’s even deer-resistant - what’s not to love?

With over 100 species, most are native to North America and are a valuable abundant food source for pollinators, particularly the Monarch butterfly. Since they tend to bloom through mid-fall, goldenrod is essential for late-season pollinators including bees, beetles, butterflies, moths, and wasps.

There’s a brilliant yellow cloud of Goldenrod blooms floating above the tables in our Sunny Perennials department. Stop by to scoop yours up before they’re gone!

You’ve heard us say it before… don’t plant your Spring-blooming bulbs without Espoma Organic's Bulb-tone!

This amazing stuff is packed with the finest natural & organic ingredients, and has an NPK code of 3-5-3. That middle number, the ‘P’ number, represents phosphorus, which plays a vital role in root development. Plant Spotlight: Cacti and Succulents

In the vibrant world of houseplants, cacti and succulents have become staples for many with their easy care, striking forms and resilient nature. While many hail from dry desert environments, others naturally thrive in tropical rainforests, alpine regions, or along seaside cliffs around the world.

The term “succulent” refers to a broad category of plants which have developed thick fleshy leaves or stems that serve as water storage organs to insure survival under arid conditions. Agave, hens & chicks, flowering kalanchoe and even snake plants are considered succulents!

Giving them those dry, desert conditions are just what these guys need to survive and thrive. Keep them in a bright, sunny window and water them only when their soil is completely dry. When watering, make sure to do it thoroughly - water should flow through the drain holes - and discard excess water. Keep this same routine regardless of time of year, though you will probably notice they need water more frequently in the spring and summer when it’s warmer and the sun is up longer. Succulents grow very slowly and have relatively low nutrient requirements so supplemental fertilizing is generally not needed.

Many cacti and succulents benefit from spending the summer months outdoors. Be sure to acclimate them by keeping them in a semi-shaded, protected area to start and gradually moving them to a sunnier location. Once outdoors, these plants typically require more water, so check them regularly.
