Sometimes one job opportunity became a family story that lasted for generations.
At Daurham, it wasnโt unusual for a mother, father, sister, brother, cousin, or child to all have a connection to the business.
Some worked there. Some learned there. Some grew up helping in the family business before they were old enough to fully understand what they were being taught.
During the celebration of the Daurham Way unveiling, where the City of Chicago honored Ernest Daurham Jr. and William โChapโ Daurham with an honorary street designation, we heard just how deeply those opportunities reached into families and throughout the community.
In Episode 3 of Daurham Way Stories, people remember entire families working alongside one another and generations being introduced to responsibility, work ethic, entrepreneurship, and opportunity through the businesses Ernie and Chap helped build.
That is what made Daurham different.
It was never just a company. It was a family business, built by family, strengthened by community, and filled with people who often became family along the way.
For many, the opportunity didnโt stop with one person. It opened a door that others in the family could walk through too.
