Next time you find one of your tomatoes split open on the vine, don't just sigh and toss it. Take a good look at which way the crack runs first, because the tomato is actually trying to tell you something.
The direction of the split is a clue. A radial crack that runs down the tomato points to a very different cause than one that circles the whole fruit, and each one is the plant's way of flagging what went wrong in how it was grown and watered. Once you can read the difference, you stop guessing and start fixing the actual problem, so you lose far fewer tomatoes to splitting for the rest of the season. There's even one type of cracking that quietly warns you a tomato is likely to burst wide open later, before it ever does. Most people never realize their split tomatoes are handing them a roadmap.
