We had such a magical night with Amanda Peters ✨🌳📚 It was an honor to have her visit the bookstore and to be in conversation with her. It was such a pleasure and I left feeling so inspired. Thank I you to everyone who came out to support an Indigenous author and an Indigenous bookstore. We have some signed copies of all three books available in store and on our website. I’ll post when we are out of signed stock. And stay tuned for more incredible authors coming later this fall!

Our friends at Helen Adams brought in some gorgeous flowers for us today. We love our friends and wonderful community, and are endlessly grateful for all the connections we’ve made as a tiny Native & q***r bookstore ✨🌸📚💕

I have been looking forward to the September Indigenous and Lit pick for so long! We are reading The Froggy Library by ••jools•• and will be discussing it on 9/20 at 12:30pm EST. I have been following Julie since about when I started Black Walnut Books, so getting to read this book feels extra special!

If you didn’t know, Indigenous and Lit is a monthly book club and it’s also a book of the month subscription box! If you want to read more books by Indigenous authors, this is a great way to do that and give a Native store lifeblood. These subscriptions really help us keep the lights on and the doors open. You can sign up for the book club (under events) and check out the subscription boxes (under shop) on our website!

The pups and I stayed up past our bedtime last night to finish The Birthing Tree. I just could not put it down and had to finish it! I can’t wait to discuss it with Amanda Peters this Friday at the bookstore at 6pm. If you’re not local, you can buy a copy of her book on our website to have signed and shipped to you. If you are local, you can rsvp to save your spot on our website.

On our roadtrip out west to get married we stopped at so many incredible bookstores! Our rule was one book each per stop, which we only broke at Birchbark Books & Native Arts because I’m only human. Booksellers are such cool people, and I’m endlessly grateful to have gotten to see so many friends and meet so many new ones. It was a joy to begin our new chapter with indie bookstores 💕 We put all of our books from the roadtrip and wedding together and I love looking at this colorful shelf.

This has been the fullest year of my life, full of grief, loss, love, new beginnings, laughter, tears, strength and happiness. It has gone so fast and I think my heart and mind are still catching up to my new reality. Amidst all of the changes, it has been harder than ever to sink into the present moment. My attention span fails me more often these days, which makes reading challenging. Audiobooks and mood reading have been lifesavers. And when I’m at a loss for what I am in the mood for, or what my soul needs, my book clubs have been buoying me along. I’m behind my reading goal, but incredibly proud of myself for all that I have been able to accomplish. These books are all incredible and got me through so many difficult times this year, for which I am so grateful. My love of reading and my faith in the power of books is as strong as ever.
