Have questions about the care of your fall mums??? Here ya go….

The short answer is, Mums need a good bath every morning. And a good night's sleep every night.

Here's what that means...

Mums need to be watered everyday and have enough time to soak up just as much water as they need for the day. That's what keeps them alive in the hot days all summer. Mums also need about 6 hours of sunlight each day to stay healthy AND... this is important... Mums need at least 12 hours of complete darkness n a cool environment (60 to 70 degrees is ideal) to keep the blooming process going. Even a brief flash of light, from cars driving by or light from a neighbors porch or from a lamp in your shop, can interrupt their sleep and stall the bloom production process.

So here is a schedule and system that might work for your shop...

8:00 AM - Take mums outside into the sunshine and water thoroughly: Flood the soil to the top of the pot. Let the water drain into a tray under the pot, then fill the tray completely with water if it's not already full.

8:30 AM - After 30 minutes, dump the water out of the trays. (You don't want them sitting in water over 30 min or it can cause root rot.)

5:00 PM - At closing time, take the mums indoors and shut them in a room with lights off, doors closed, blinds shut. Set thermostat in the room to 65 degrees.

Repeat that schedule each day and you should have happy healthy Mums that bloom as quickly as possible.
