Trademarks Matter — Even for Small Shops Like Ours

You may have seen the story going around about Buc-ee's winning $850,000 in a trademark infringement case: https://finance.yahoo.com/small-business/articles/buc-ees-wins-850-000-220500736.html

It's easy to read a headline like that and think, "That's a giant corporation flexing legal muscle — that doesn't apply to a small shop like mine." But that's not how trademark and copyright enforcement actually works, and it's worth talking about plainly.

Trademark and copyright holders — big and small — go after infringement wherever they find it. It doesn't matter if the infringing product came from a multi-billion-dollar competitor or from a one-person Etsy shop working out of a garage. The size of your business does not shrink your legal exposure. A cease-and-desist, a takedown, or a lawsuit doesn't care how small your operation is — it only cares whether you had the right to use that design, name, or mark in the first place.

Here's where we stand at Honor Dog Designs:

We hold an official license through the USMC Trademark Office, and we take that licensing relationship seriously. Every single Marine Corps-related design we produce is individually reviewed and approved for our use — not because it "seems fine," and not because we're Marine veterans ourselves. Being veteran-owned doesn't grant automatic rights to use the Corps' marks, and we don't treat it that way. Each design goes through the actual approval process, every time.

If we get enough requests for other licensed marks or organizations, we will absolutely look into pursuing additional licensing agreements. We want to serve our community, and we're not opposed to expanding what we can legally offer.
But here's the line we will not cross: we will not create or sell a product using a trademarked or copyrighted design that we don't hold a license for. Not "just this once." Not "it's a small batch." Not "nobody will notice."

It's simply not worth it — not to us, and honestly, not to you either. An infringing product can get pulled, refunded, or recalled after the fact, and it can put both the maker and the customer in hot water. Licensing exists for a reason, and respecting it — including going through proper approval every single time — is part of doing this the right way.

We'd rather tell you "no, not yet" on a design than hand you something that could come back to bite us or our awesome customers. If there's a specific mark or organization you'd love to see us offer, let us know — that's how we'll decide what other licensing we will apply for in the future.

As a USMC Veteran-owned small business, we've poured that same discipline and pride into every single piece we make. Today, we're overwhelmed with gratitude looking back at everything we've built — from custom keychains and plaques to embroidered apparel and one-of-a-kind pieces made just for you.

We've been anxiously waiting to be able to announce this and I just received work - Honor Dog Designs is now a full licensee for the USMC and can now use the EGA and other Marine Corps logos / sayings on shirts and other merchandise!

We are SO excited for this new part of our business!

Now that they’ve been given to the recipient, I can post the picture of the tumbler, patches, & stickers we worked on this week. They came out SO good! Looking forward to working on more great projects next week when we’re back in town!

The Cricut, cup turner, embroidery machine, and UV printer are all running at full speed—our workspace is buzzing with creativity!
