Lake Granbury Master Gardeners The Texas Master Gardener program had its beginnings in 1978 in an Extension horticulture training at A&M University.

The Lake Granbury Master Gardener program is a Hood County volunteer 501(c)3 group trained by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service to serve Hood County through horticultural education and to improve the quality of life through horticultural projects. When it comes to green and growing things, Master Gardeners dig into their service in all kinds of ways: teaching, giving presentations, building an

d growing trial and demo gardens, writing newsletters and articles, providing clerical help, and designing and maintaining Web pages. Master Gardeners particpate in 50 hours of instruction conducted by their local County Extension agent, then they share their knowledge by donating 50 hours of volunteer service back to their community within their first year. By the 1990's, a statewide, non-profit organization was formed and called the Texas Master Gardener Association. A love of gardening and search for knowledge is central to why Master Gardeners join the program. They remain Master Gardeners to enjoy the comaraderie and friendship of others who share their interests, to gain and share horticultural knowledge, and to give back to their community

The Monarchs are coming back to Texas this fall: is your garden ready?

Monarchs need both nectar plants and milkweed as they make their way south to overwinter in Mexico. A few North Texas hardy plants that are great for Monarchs:

Annuals: Zinnia, Gomphrena, Pintas and Tithonia

Fall Blooming Perennials: Gregg’s Mist, Salvia Greggii, White Mistflower and Fall Aster

Any kind of milkweed! Butterflyweed, green, showy, tropical -- Monarch caterpillars can eat all of them!

August Garden Tasks:

1. Outdoor Seed Starting: okra, corn, pumpkin, cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini, pinto beans, bush beans, Chinese cabbage, swiss chard
2.Divide, disinfect and replant iris. To disinfect, dip rhizomes in a 10-1 water and bleach solution.
3. Instead of watering lawns more frequently, water thoroughly and deeply; check for grubs. Treat if more than 5-7 grubs are found per square foot.
4. Order wildflower seeds and spring-blooming bulbs. Pay close attention to our time zone and use only reputable companies.
5. Assess your gardens for bare spots and lack of texture.
6. As wildflowers and perennials go to seed, collect and store seed for next year.

While these are reliable performers, the North Central Texas climate supports a range of lesser-known herbs that bring bold flavor and beauty to area gardens. Most of these plants require well-drained soil, many are drought tolerant once established and some pull double duty as pollinator magnets.”

“The Granbury City Council has proclaimed July 2026 as "Milkweed for Monarch Butterflies Month" in recognition of Granbury's place along the Monarch Butterfly migration route. Every fall, thousands of monarchs pass through our community on their incredible 3,000-mile journey to Mexico.

Milkweed is the only plant where monarch butterflies lay their eggs, making it essential to the survival of future generations. By planting native milkweed and other nectar-rich flowers, residents can help provide the food and habitat these iconic butterflies need during their migration.

Children and adults who are young at heart will enjoy seeing the creative whimsy recently added to the Children's Garden area at the Lake Granbury Master Gardeners Demonstration Garden, 1410 W. Pearl St. The previous Hobbit House was taken down and replaced with a Hobbit Tower, complete with appropriate decor. And a shade was added to another area of the Children's Garden.
