“Over the summer, the ceramics class progressed from foundational studio work into increasingly complex forms and preparation for a final firing. Students began by reclaiming clay, learning the studio process from bisque firing through glazing and kiln firing, and practicing bowl forms while discussing the philosophy behind making pottery. As the course continued, students shared and discussed their work, explored the five qualities of a successful teapot, practiced constructing spouts, bodies, lids, and handles, and experimented with surface decoration using texture, slips, sodium silicate, and glaze. Later sessions focused on larger platter forms, bowls thrown off the hump, glazing and spray-booth techniques, and preparing finished pieces for the kiln. Throughout the course, demonstrations, individual assistance, discussion, and time for independent work were emphasized. By the final sessions, the kiln load had progressed to a full load for firing, bringing the class from raw clay and experimentation through finished, glazed work and a culminating kiln firing.”
