14 Historical Flags of the United States decorate Downtown Grand Rapids… it’s a sight to see! 🇺🇸

In addition, Grand Rapids added a Hometown Heroes banner project last year honoring our Veterans!

Our Lamp Post features the 1861 Fort Sumter Flag and Mr. Jim Sproull as our Hometown Hero.

The Fort Sumter flag graced the skies in Charleston Harbor when the Confederates fired the first shots of the Civil War on April 12, 1861. It was the only US flag that was flown in Charleston Harbor, as every other harbor fort was flying a Confederate flag.

The flag featured a diamond pattern of 33 stars, even though Kansas had been admitted to statehood as the 34th state in January of 1861. Obviously, there were more pressing issues at the time.

After being forced to evacuate Fort Sumter, US forces under the command of Major Robert Anderson, kept the flag, delivering it to a public rally in New York.

Four year later, Fort Sumter fell from the confederacy back into the hands of the United Staes on February 17, 1865.

President Lincoln order a public ceremony on April 14th in an Executive Order stating: “Ordered, first. That on the hour of noon on the 14th day of April, 1865, Brevet Major General Anderson will raise and plant upon the ruins of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, the same United States flag which floated over the battlements of the that fort during the rebel assault.”

Sadly, later that evening, the President was shot, succumbing to his injury on April 15, 1865.

Today, the real Fort Sumter Flag is under the conservation of the National Park Museum at Fort Sumter. While it has been removed from public display to protect it, replicas are still produced of this important piece of American History.

Tomorrow, we’ll share about Jim Sproull, who is the Hometown Hero featured on our lamp post!
