šŸ“£ šŸ“£ BIG NEWS šŸ“£ šŸ“£

We’re Julie, Christine, and Will, and we’re incredibly excited (and more than a little humbled!) to be the new owners of Books & Mortar.

We bought the bookstore because we love it, yes, but even more because we love what it means to our community. Books & Mortar has always been more than a place to buy books—it’s a place to find new ideas, connect with your neighbors, discover voices you might not otherwise hear, and feel like there’s a place for all of us to be welcomed and celebrated. We want to carry that spirit forward while building a sustainable future for the store, so it can keep being part of this community for many years to come.

For us, this is also a bit of a dream come true. Will and Julie have been friends for more than 10 years, and Julie and Christine have been married for four. The three of us have spent years looking for ways to build community into everyday life, and we’re honored to have the opportunity to help steward a place that has already been doing that so passionately. We’re especially grateful to the booksellers who have poured so much care, knowledge, and heart into this store. They are a huge part of why Books & Mortar became a place we loved, and we’ll always be grateful for what they’ve given this community. While we’ll be running the shop ourselves as we work toward making it financially sustainable, we hope you’ll continue to help us make Books & Mortar a place where books, ideas, people, and community can flourish.

Books and Mortar will be reopening in September. Stay tuned for more details!

Read full post for some happy news!

As we approach our final day of normal business hours (this Saturday), we are overwhelmed by all our memories of this place. Books & Mortar has always been magic. Everything from the books themselves to the light of Cherry Street to the brilliance of our booksellers - all of it has made this place warm and active in every sense of the word.

Thank you, Books & Mortar team for the years and years of joy. A special thank you to Maggie, our Manager, who for the past 3 years has held this place with deep love and care.

HAPPY NEWS: In the wake of our closure announcement, some amazing members of the community expressed interest in purchasing Books & Mortar and reopening its doors on Cherry Street this Summer/early Fall. We won’t be able to share full details until August, but please hang tight. Something beautiful is coming. In the meantime, Books & Mortar’s current booksellers will be continuing offerings such as Sapphic Book Club through

All of this is such a testament to Books & Mortar’s community of love and support. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Grand Rapids.

Happy to say that this isn’t a goodbye. It’s a see you soon. Our little neighborhood shop may just find its next chapter 😊

Crawlers unite! Our Reinventing Sci-Fi book club meets this evening for our discussion of Dungeon Crawler Carl from 6:30-8 pm at the bookstore. This is also Bookseller Maggie’s last meeting in this space as we wind down operations and prepare to close the store by the end of the month. Our book clubs will be finding new homes in Grand Rapids, so we invite you to come connect and talk through next steps whether you’ve had a chance to read the book or not!

First, thank you for all of your kind words, love, and memories. So many of your comments have brought tears, laughter, and my own memories of Books & Mortar forward. I cannot express how much this has all meant to me.

Second, I want to offer some transparency about ownership, because the internet can be a scary and mean place. I purchased this business from its founders in 2018. Until 2022, when I had my daughter, I was the only full time employee at the shop. After having June, I worked full time elsewhere and supported a team of Booksellers in the shop’s operations to the best of my ability. In that time, the store began operating at a loss. I stopped paying myself, maintained the wages of my team, and took on significant personal debt to keep this place and its team afloat.

I have agonized over this decision. I have worked for the past 6+ months to sell Books & Mortar and hit many painful brick walls. Due to burnout and a need for financial relief, I made the decision to close. I know that this means so much to many of you, and I am more than open to talk through your questions and feelings. I typically choose not to engage in comments sections on sensitive topics like this, but I do value this community and am here to talk. You can reach me at [email protected].

Sincerely,
Bookseller Jenny

Important Update: After 10 years, I have decided to close Books & Mortar in early August.

I took over Books & Mortar in 2018 from two wonderful humans who founded it in 2016. It has been part of my life for a long time, and the Books & Mortar team - along with the community that has sustained and supported this dream – means so much to me.

The hard and unshakable reality is that I am completely burned out.

For years, I've worked a full-time job while supporting this bookstore and becoming a mom. I am deeply exhausted, and as much as I wish I had the energy to give this place the love and care it needs to thrive, I don’t right now.

I still believe in the mission and work of Books & Mortar. I still believe in the power of local economy, books, and radically welcoming third spaces. This is a good fight.

I know how much this place has meant to so many of you, and I am deeply sorry that I can't keep holding it. My hope is that by letting this chapter end, I make room for new creativity, new gathering spaces, and new possibilities. Maybe Books & Mortar can emerge in another form someday, or maybe new endeavors will open in ways none of us can yet imagine.

Important dates:
šŸ“š Last day of regular business hours: August 1
šŸŽ‰ Celebration of Books & Mortar: August 8

Between August 1 and August 8, we'll likely have additional sale days as we wind things down. After the 8th, we will maintain some portions of our online store, and some of our book clubs may seek new meeting venues in GR. All updates will be posted here and, on our website, as they become available.

Thank you for making this dream real. Little Jenny, who dreamed of owning a bookstore, is heartbroken to close this chapter and overflowing with gratitude for everyone who made it possible.

Some of the best things in life come to an end, and that's okay. The ending doesn't erase their beauty or their impact.

The future is still vast. And it is still bright.

With love and gratitude,
Bookseller Jenny

Friends, please join us tonight for our Bookseller Faves discussion of One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This! I’m finding this book hitting extra hard as we ramp up for the primaries next month, and I can’t wait to talk about it with you all. We’re meeting at the shop from 6:30-8 this evening. Hope you can make it!
