I owe a picture of my vertical white ermine, and both directions of old gold.

I am not sure of the standard sizes of the old gold rolls, but they are closer to 20 than 15 yards.

Newest edit: I have sent out replies to those who asked for a roll. If your number is below 13, you will receive a roll. I will be contacting you shortly to make arrangements. Those whose number is higher than 13 will be the first to be served when the reorder comes through in (probably) early November. If I find another Mother Lode of trim, you will be served based on your number. NB: The roll size will almost certainly change as part of the reorder process.

We spent hours looking for this box at Pennsic.

It was in Arkansas.

Edited to add:

I have tons (perhaps 30 rolls) of the vertical.in Alabama.

According to my notes, the horizontal is 15.833 yards $23.75. The vertical is 17.5 yards $26.25.
Today is a driving day, so I will review requests tonight.

Second edit:

There are currently requests for 33 rolls. I have 13. I have placed a reorder, which I hope to have in hand November 3. The roll sizes will likely be different. I will keep you updated.

I am putting together the list of those who "made the cut".

I should mention that this trim is also available with old gold instead of the white, both horizontal and vertical.

Both trims are reversible, so can be white/old gold spots on black. You can see this in the upper left hand corner of the box.

Continue to put in your requests, I will add you to the wait list.

“Please hold it back for me” is a form of oral contract, at least within the trimshop. It means, “Pull the trim from the display, or do not put it up, because I intend to buy it all. None of the other 9000 potential customers can have access to it, because I want it all.”

Yes, it took me until the last day of the war to find it in the safe place I was holding it for you. When I contacted you to make delivery arrangements, your response was, “Please cancel.”

My shop does not need customers like you. You may shop elsewhere for your trim.

Edited to clarify:

I wish to clarify a bit about what happened: The customer came in on Monday the 27th, the first day that I was in any way open, but mainly just unloading. They said, I am hoping to find this trim, and showed me a picture.

I said, "You are in luck. That trim has been out of stock for 2-3 years, but I just saw it among things I have been unpacking. I had her send me a message here so that I could respond to her quickly when I did find it.

She returned to the shop several times asking if it had been found. Eventually I reminded her that I had a message waiting for the rediscovery.

I eventually found the trim on the final Saturday of the War. She would not have been able to purchase it directly as sales had closed. She asked her to send her a paypal request. When I finally sent her that request last night, she cancelled this morning.

In this case the trim never made it to the floor, but had it, I feel certain that it would have moved quickly. I spent at least an hour looking for it specifically, when I could have been doing more productive work.
So there was no "Taking a deposit" possible.

A regular customer, who has an order ready to go, has already spoken for the trim in question, so the economic consequences are now moot.

A rainy morning meant that I could spend the morning in the back room, digging out vintage trim.

These are likely the last bits of Celtic Beast.
Except for the two big rolls, there is no cutting. If you ask for it to be measured and decide that it is no enough, you are responsible for rolling it back up.

Most of the small rolls are 4 yards or less.

No one may call dibs until 5 pm. You must be present to win.

The Rumor Mill is an idiot.

Countless customers have come in, with greetings like,

“I thought you retired.”

Or

“This is your last year, right?”

Once more, for those in the back:

Calontir Trim will close at the conclusion of Pennsic LIV, AS LXII, 2027.

NEXT YEAR IS MY LAST!!!

However, restocking has ended. I am doing my best to sell down what is left. So your selection will be much better today than next year. So come shop today. Remember, trim packs small.

Thank you all for your decades of loyal patronage.

With all the discussion of a specific movie, I have my own tale to tell:

Sing, Muse, of the travels of the man of yards…

Wait, not that one exactly.

Years ago, I was headed to Estrella War in my Honda Odyssey minivan. Two thirds of the way there, it blew its transmission.

My arrival was two days late and I had to spend time shopping for a new vehicle.

I, a Classicist, should have known better.

What is an Odyssey, but a war trip filled with adventures, pain, and delay?

I am taking the weekend off from my medieval war to attend a High School Band Reunion. This social obligation, and my many years of time in armor and Falcon Tabard have been made possible by my endless parade of “Charming Shopgirls”, who operate the booth and serve my loyal customer base while I am away.

They typically arrive on site as soon as the gates open, and in some cases before (through volunteer positions in other aspects of the event), and devote endless hours to the operation of the business. I love these women dearly for their help and devotion. One of the many things that I will miss after retirement is the opportunity to spend so much time in their company.

They have embraced my eccentricities and wild ideas. When I started wearing my Hawaiian print Byzantine madness tunic, they allowed me to bedeck them similarly. At first, I viewed it as a fun little trifle, but one night of Madness I overheard one customer tell another, “It’s easy to know who works here. Just find someone in the obnoxious garb.”

I have always said that I use the term “charming” aspirationally more than descriptively. They are a group of feisty folks with strong opinions. I often think of the line from the Mary Tyler Moore Show, where upon meeting Mary, Lou Grant says, “You’ve got spunk…I hate spunk.” But in truth their charm in the presence of customers, their knowledge of my ever changing stock, and its historical tie-ins, and their ability to direct customers to the (nearly) perfect makes them an invaluable resource to my business.

If you get a chance, thank them for their years of service and wish them a joyous time after the last yard of trim is measured and cut next Pennsic.

I could not have done it without them.
