This is going to be a multi-part series on doing my first real refinish. I have a ‘76 Gibson S1 on the bench right now that needs a ton of work. The frets are unsalvageable, the electronics don’t work, the neck is gross, etc.

As a guy who pretty much only does new construction, I posted a story a while back and asked fellow looths for assistance. A few of you graciously responded!

First up had to be removing these frets, which I have zero prior experience doing. I spent some time chatting with John Keilty/Johnny Rox and he had a great tip about making a DIY iron for heating frets. It worked like an absolute champ and I’m extremely pleased with how this phase of the project went.

There will be more posts on this refurb forthcoming. I hope you’ll join me on the journey and enjoy this little occasional departure from my usual posts!
