Ever since we moved to our Grayling location I've been casually looking for a retired military vehicle to park out front to bring attention to the place. I've bugged anyone even remotely connected with MATES here at Camp Grayling to see if they have anything that's off the books. Took a trip to the local scrap yard yesterday and found out why I'd been striking out, lol. These are two of the M60 MBTs and another armored vehicle out of dozens and dozens they pulled from the Range 40 complex to scrap . It was really fascinating to see all the damage from the air to ground target practice. Sadly their contract stipulated they can't sell so much as a bolt from any of it. Oh, well. The search continues.

We were very excited recently to take in these early 1970s West Point uniforms donated by the retired Major who wore them. Included were the Full Dress, Dress Gray, and two As for Class jackets with trousers for all, as well as the iconic Mackintosh raincoat. We've been hoping to add something from the college to the museum for a while and are very grateful for the donation.

We saved the best for last. These are definitely not found in the wild often at all. Most War Department documents during WWII were marked at least confidential if not restricted. But finding actual documents marked Secret is really remarkable. There's maybe 50 or so in total out of the hundreds and hundreds of documents from Aunt Penny's estate. They cover all manner of information from radio frequencies and call signs to daily summaries. Many came with a distribution list for initialing as well as destroy instructions.

Another really interesting group of items from Aunt Penny's estate are the unit and branch newsletters and dailies. Astute Mad Magazine aficionados might recognize the art of Pvt. Al Jaffee who was on the staff of the KIWI, Bolling Field's newsletter where Lt. Sawkins was stationed.

Aunt Penny's Filthy Fortunes episode airs tonight at 10pm on Discovery.

Although most of what we were able to rescue from Aunt Penny's estate was paper, there were a few uniform items as well. Jackets, caps, skirts, slacks, pressed shirts with the cleaners binding still attached, gloves, scarves, neck ties, etc. and a really uncommon set of issue female pajamas. Another rare find is the foul weather cover on the summer cap shown here. It was crumpled up in a ball in one of the footlockers and I thought it was an old shower cap at first. Nearly tossed it as trash before I decided to check. It would have come with an additional plastic panel on the back to cover the neck and collar.

Watch for us tonight at 10pm on Discovery for Aunt Penny's episode of Filthy Fortunes!
