We had a lot of fun this past August during the Northern Strike exercises. More than 200 British troops came in through the week along with Canadians and our regular favorites, the Taiwanese. Traded a lot of patches and had great conversations about military history and heraldry. The highlight however was a visit by Major General Davidson F. Forleh, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia (second from left in the photo). He was accompanied by two brigadier generals on his staff. It's not often that we get to play host to generals. They were great and we shared some good stories and jokes. Hopefully we'll see them again next year.

Before the familiar yellow and black Fallout Shelter signs came out in December of 1961, there were just plain shelter signs. Most Civil Defense planners worked off of data released regarding the atomic bombing of Japan. Search and rescue, evacuation, and rebuilding quickly were all front and center, not spending two or more weeks underground. Then on March 1st, 1954, the Bravo shot of the Operation Castle series of thermonuclear tests detonated in the Pacific with a yield of 15 meagtons, more than double what was expected. This became the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated by the US. Massive amounts of irradiated bits of coral fell from the sky over a swath of ocean nearly 300 miles long and 75 miles wide. Many island natives along with the crew of a Japanese fishing boat suffered radiation burns as a result. The word fallout began to be heard outside the laboratory after that incident and for the first time, radiation effects came before blast and heat as the primary concern in a nuclear attack.

The signs shown here are from the 1956 revision of the 1952 booklet Civil Defense in the Schools, published by the City of Detroit Board of Education. Notice is given that no materials were to be provided for these signs and it was up to the reader to choose how to make the sign. The large S was the most recognizable part for Civil Defense signage of the era, found in public buildings, factories, and the newly built interstate on evacuation routes.

On this day in 1942 President Roosevelt signed a bill creating a women’s auxiliary agency in the Navy known as “Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service” or WAVES for short. The army women's auxiliary were known as WAACs for "Women's Army Auxiliary Corps" at first then as WACs later when the word Auxiliary was dropped. We've had this 1943 WAVES uniform in the back for a few months now but haven't had a mannequin small enough for it. We recently found a vintage dress form that works nicely and when we find a blouse and tie we'll be incorporating it into the museum. Her rating was Petty Officer 3rd Class Storekeeper.

Ever since we moved to our Grayling location I've been casually looking for a retired military vehicle to park out front to bring attention to the place. I've bugged anyone even remotely connected with MATES here at Camp Grayling to see if they have anything that's off the books. Took a trip to the local scrap yard yesterday and found out why I'd been striking out, lol. These are two of the M60 MBTs and another armored vehicle out of dozens and dozens they pulled from the Range 40 complex to scrap . It was really fascinating to see all the damage from the air to ground target practice. Sadly their contract stipulated they can't sell so much as a bolt from any of it. Oh, well. The search continues.

We were very excited recently to take in these early 1970s West Point uniforms donated by the retired Major who wore them. Included were the Full Dress, Dress Gray, and two As for Class jackets with trousers for all, as well as the iconic Mackintosh raincoat. We've been hoping to add something from the college to the museum for a while and are very grateful for the donation.
