💀 NEW ACQUISITION FOR THE PRIVATE COLLECTION

This is a real human skull transformed into a remarkably detailed anatomical teaching specimen.

Its sections open to reveal structures normally hidden inside the skull and jaw. Look closely and you can see the roots of the teeth, the latticework of bone beneath them, and hand-painted pathways marking blood vessels. Muscle attachments are labeled directly on the bone, while tiny clasps and springs hold the pieces together.

It’s an extraordinary example of the work that went into teaching human anatomy through physical specimens. Every opening reveals something new.

A special thank-you to an anonymous donor who has helped bring many of the human anatomy specimens in The Private Collection to Greeley. I am grateful for the trust he’s placed in us to share these pieces with visitors. 🖤

🎪FROM THE PRIVATE COLLECTION — No. 004🎪

Millie and Christine McCoy — “The Carolina Twins”

Of all the photographs in our collection of 19th-century sideshow performers, this is one of my favorites.

Not because of their physical condition.

Because of what happened to their family.

Millie and Christine McCoy were born conjoined and enslaved in North Carolina in 1851. As children, their extraordinary appearance made them valuable commodities. They were separated from their family, exhibited before paying audiences, subjected to medical examinations, and became the center of years of disputes over who controlled them.

Eventually known professionally as Millie-Christine, the sisters became internationally famous performers, appearing throughout the United States and Europe. Earning up to $25,000 per season.

But one part of their story has always stuck with me.

After emancipation, they helped their father Jacob McCoy purchased the farm that had belonged to his former enslaver. The family went from being considered someone else's property to owning the very land connected to their enslavement.

There's something incredibly powerful about that reversal.
