There is a monster on the fence post this month. Gray armor, a long beak folded under its chin, and half a gear wheel rising out of its back like something left over from an older world.

It is a wheel bug, the largest assassin bug in North America, and it earns the name honestly. It just never earns it on you. Wheel bugs are slow, near-sighted, and shy. Bother one and it drops off the leaf and walks away. What that beak is actually for is the guest list nobody wants. Japanese beetles. Stink bugs. The webworms bagging up your pecan branches. She stalks them a step at a time, all patience, and settles each argument on your behalf.

One fair warning, because this page deals plainly. A handled wheel bug can bite, and it is a memorable one. So do not pick her up. You never needed to. She was never going to climb anything but the rose cane, looking for the beetle that got there first.

The gear on her back is not a threat. It is a uniform. 🪲
