BOOK REVIEW TIME!
I just finished reading AN ACADEMIC AFFAIR by Jodi McAlister, and I have some thoughts!
I’ll admit, the very beginning of the book felt a little too implausible for me. The setup is that Sadie and Jonah have been bitter rivals for 13 years, but having them get the exact same grades, tie for every single award, and even wind up at the exact same share house felt just a bit too perfectly convenient to be real.
BUT! Once the marriage proposal actually happens, the book completely hooked me!
To secure a coveted university job, they enter into a legal marriage of convenience, and from that moment on, the story is pure gold. The chemistry between them is absolutely electric, the academic banter is incredibly witty (Jonah's chapters even have footnotes! ), and the slow-burn romance is so satisfying. The side characters and family dynamics are also incredibly lovable.
If you love a smart, bookish rom-com and can look past a slightly far-fetched setup, this turns into an absolute must-read! Who has this one on their radar?

I just finished reading THE PIRATE QUEEN by Ariel Lawhon and oh my goodness, I absolutely loved this book!

The way this story is told is so unique and clever. Instead of a standard, long chronological timeline, the chapters alternate between three stages of her life: Maiden, Mother, and Matriarch. It brilliantly advances her age with each flip of the chapter, allowing you to follow the incredible evolution of her life seamlessly without it ever feeling like one long, overwhelming string of text. It kept me completely hooked!

The depth of the characters is amazing. There is a huge cast of people to meet, and you truly fall in love with them because the main character, Grace, touches the lives of everyone around her in such profound ways.

Grace O'Malley is an absolute powerhouse. She is a sea captain, a clan leader, a lady of the house, a pirate, a fierce leader of the people, and truly thought of as a queen in Ireland. The book shows how she was equally feared, loved, and hated depending on who crossed her path.

No spoilers here, but if you love sweeping historical fiction with a legendary, ultra-powerful female lead and a phenomenal structure, you need to pick this one up immediately!

Kari's quick thought -
I was pleased with Moriarty's 1st sequel. I will admit however, to rereading (skimming) Big Little Lies - I did not watch the TV series - to refamiliarize myself with the ladies. I found them so relatable to real life and appreciated it's humanity. I liked the kids in the older, teenage years too. Of course, watch for the classic Moriarty twist!

Kari's BOOK REVIEW TIME! 📚

I just finished an advanced copy of Jodi Picoult’s upcoming novel, HOLLOW BONES (out Sept 15th!), and oh my goodness... I am still recovering!

Living just an hour outside of New York when 9/11 happened, that day has a heavy, permanent place in my memory. Reading this book was incredibly devastating and emotional for me—I lost count of how many times I cried.

The book follows Molly, a powerhouse 25-year-old woman who lost her mother in the twin towers when she was only a baby. To cope with a danger she can't control, she dedicates her life to disaster response and preparedness for the state of Rhode Island—constantly prepping for every worst-case scenario.

It’s told through multiple perspectives and the writing completely hooks you from chapter one. Without spoiling anything, please brace yourself for some jaw-dropping, shocking moments that I NEVER saw coming!

Also, for my fellow Jodi Picoult fans out there: keep an eye out for Molly's husband, Jesse. Seeing him brought me right back to My Sister's Keeper (which was my very first Picoult novel and an all-time favorite!). It’s a wonderful addition to the story that will make you love this book even more.

If you love deeply emotional, multi-POV stories that make you question everything, put this on your TBR list immediately!
