Today I am making a signature soap for a very special occasion that will be here in a few months. Soap takes at least 30 days to cure. No worries— there is plenty of time. The first decision when making a soap batch is always what kind of soap you want to make. I chose a recipe that is moisturizing and has a nice soapy lather. The next decision is the fragrance. I made the decision on fragrance based on the people it will be made for. She would say— I just want peace and no anxiety— lavender goes in the mix for that. He likes being in nature— walking, sleeping, riding or hunting— in goes lang-ylang— it represents wilderness. And finally I added some spearmint because a long time ago she planted a long row of spearmint to ward off mosquitos— better have some of that in the midst of the wilderness. The next choice is the color combination— she loves red— it’s a hard color to include in soap but I chose a deep burgundy talc powder knowing that the color will be a rich rose but she loves roses so that seems fitting. The second color is the original color of the soap— a rich buttery cream color that will cure closer to white than yellow. I put a little swirl in the middle to combine the two colors— this soap sets up quick so not much time to mess around. I heaped the soap up on top of the mold— to represent blessings overflowing. Then the soap was carefully swirled on the top. I put a sprinkle of iridescent and silver glitter— 25 years of marriage is a silver anniversary. The next morning the loaf is ready to cut. 9 soap bars are now curing for 30 days. If you are interested in having a custom batch of soap made to give as a gift to yourself or to others— send me a message. I charge $60 for a whole loaf of soap— 9 bars.

Why a lavender farm? This was the origin of the farm we now care for. Sleepless nights— an uncomfortable but necessary chemo port followed by the Incredible Hulk effects of prednisone and the relentless side effects of chemotherapy— cancer treatment that is in the rear view mirror now but not forgotten. Lavender helped me sleep and helped me find some semblance of calm in the midst of some rough days. Now Jeff and I grow lavender in the hope that the products we make help others find a bit of calm in the midst of the storms they face and some sleep when it feels like a battle rather than a restful experience.

This is the last week to stop by Ever After Lavender Farm. There is no entry fee this week. We still have fresh lavender u-pick available through Saturday. Jeff will be distilling lavender essential oil all day Thursday through Saturday. The gift shop is stocked with lavender goodies!
