Watt Heritage Fiber Tools

Watt Heritage Fiber Tools My page is a quick access page where you can see what I have to offer in hand made fiber tools...an I make Minor's Accelerating heads for walking wheels too.

Custom design and manufacturing of fiber swifts, blending boards, hackles, fiber combs, and manufactured parts for any and all spinning wheels. I love repairing items from history and keeping them functional. I do it for the love of restoring the beauty to a work of art from years gone by…not to become rich. If you ask anyone that has had me work for them…I’ll defy them to say that they paid anywh

ere close to the going rate for wheelwright work. The smile that appears on the face of a person when they see their repaired spinning wheel is one of the few unrealized appreciations for most craftsmen. I truly enjoy the feeling of accomplishment that accompanies the joy I get from a customer’s smile. I received the wheel or other fiber tool, access the needed repairs, give a rough quote, and if accepted…assign you a spot on the list. I try my best to stay within the order of customers on the list, except when I am held up by glue set time, lack of parts, or the allotted time to work on something. At that point, I may work on whatever is possible to complete in a given time frame available. Some small jobs needn’t wait as I can repair them as I work on other big jobs. Remember….it is a heritage we restore and promote here… not just a spinning wheel. Text, message, or call for a quote.

We lost Trinity, one of our sheep that was very old and was having trouble getting up and down and around. She passed yesterday and returned back to the earth last evening. She is in a far better place now. On a brighter note...Chester regained his flat in the barn. He is a lucky bird of at least 12 years of age because he has a penthouse overlooking the interior of the barn, the flat (paddock in the corner of the barn) and an outside courtyard. He is the Icon of the farm.

I finished up the pancake compressor yesterday as soon as the repair part arrived. I was able to clean and smooth up the intake and locking valves but the check valve was beyond saving. When I was done, it worked like a new one making the customer very happy.

So, remember when you could take something you used often to a repairman who would repair it for you rather than have you throw it away and be forced to go buy another one? Remember when people repaired things and companies didn't make things disposable? Well, I saw a real need for someone to repair small appliances, hand tools, lamps, and many other items for people who don't always want to send everything to a landfill only to lay out lots of cash to buy a replacement when their item could be repaired for a fraction of the cost. Bring you item to me and let me evaluate repairs, if possible and the cost of doing so. If the item is un-repairable, there is no cost to you for the service of checking it.
How can I do this when others can't? I am retired and offer my expertise as a public service to my community, neighbors, and friends...not to make a living, so unlike someone who has to pay rent on a building and make a clear profit, I can do things such as this for a very low and reasonable price. I look forward to repairing you items throughout the winter months and saving you money.

I had the pancake compressor all apart last night and repaired the intake and exhaust plate valves and checked the rings and cylinder of the piston. I had to order parts including a check valve that rusted badly. I will be stocking some parts for these compressors because they are used by almost every do-it-yourself who uses air tools.

I just finished Danielle's Lendrum Super Jumbo flyer assembly this morning.
We will be taking orders for these from Facebook friends and customers since they are impossible to find. Seems like anyone who has one will not sell it and those who made them before are not planning on ever making them again, so we will.
Place your order for one by contacting me at [email protected] or calling 518-819-6994.
The cost is $350.00 plus tax, insurance, and shipping to your house. Place your order today and I will send you a Pay-Pal invoice for easy, safe, convenient payment and you can have your super jumbo flyer assembly in about two weeks.

Today I finished up Ronnie's Daniel Danner Castle wheel and it is spinning like a charm. What a beautiful piece of history coming from Manheim, in Lancaster County, PA.
These were made in his shop there from 1830 through 1840.

Today after returning from town and Vick's acupuncture appointment, I worked on Ronnie's Daniel Danner wheel again. I finished up the birdcage distaff and now it simply needs stained to match the rest of the wheel. I put the treadle bearing piece on after making it, then added a drive band and had it spinning in no time. I did a bit of alignment work and think I might need to replace the chipped whorl to make sure it doesn't throw the band.
What a beautiful wheel and it is approaching museum quality now...

Today I finished staining the flyer on Ronnie's Daniel Danner wheel and made the distaff shaft. Tomorrow I drill the angles holes for the twisted birdcage...after which I will stain it and make the missing metal hinge for the treadle and fill the nail holes where a misguided repair was made years ago...

Today I worked in the basement shop creating Ronnie's distaff for his Daniel Danner wheel. It is an interesting venture to create the entire thing from scratch.
The new cherry flyer yoke is fitted on the mandrel and holes for the yarn hooks are drilled. Tomorrow I will create 20 hooks and the actual bird cage distaff to fit the pieces I made today.

I worked in the basement shop today for a while and finished the lathe work on the flyer. I am now ready to drill the yarn holes from the sides into the or***ce hole where the yarn comes out to run around the hooks on the flyer. Then I will have to file the square flats for the flyer yoke, thread the end for the whorl and make a whorl and bobbin.

I have been working in the basement wheel shop and was turning out a new mandrel for a flyer I am making when the lathe went down. I have parts purchased and on the way, but cannot do lathe work until the parts arrive.
I finished Barbara's wheels, so now I'm doing handwork on other wheels and making bobbins. I have two other wood lathes, so I can definitely make bobbins and other woodturning.

This morning I was fortunate enough to go to the basement workshop and dive into the spinning wheel repairs. I am working on three wheels at once, moving from one to the other to try finishing them together since they are all from the same area. I have the parts for the birdcage distaff of Ronnie's and I am working on both of Ellyane's wheels, moving from one to the other when I run into problems, which allows me to keep working as I think about the direction I need to go to overcome the problem encountered. They both tell me that they are not in any hurry, but I wish to keep caught up in case a major influx of work should come in before Christmas. Attached are current pictures of my work so far. I'm also including the same pictures of the carding machine we have for sale. It is motorized and the drive sized to run at the correct speed and it cards like a dream. I patterned it after the one I motorized for Vicki several years ago when she was tired of hand cranking the one she had. It is an excellent buy at only $950.00 for a new motorized carder. And remember guys and gals, Christmas is coming!!!!!

I'm quite happy right now...though tired and a little sore. I finished the Caleb Bedwell 1845 Great wheel for Barbara today. I moved the 300-pound drill press from the tight quarters against the wall, out into the middle of the basement shop so I could place the wheel on the bed of the drill press to bore out the center to accept a new tapered insert of hardwood. I had Vick slip the wheel down over the post after removing the 200-pound drill head and then replaced it to bore the wheel hub. The only problem is that once finished, You have to disassemble the drill press again to remove the wheel from the table AND reassemble the press again! It did, however, turn nice and true with only a little wobble from warpage of the outer wheel band or spokes. Still, it is 98% better than when it came here.
