I started building a dining table and benches for my sister months ago. I finished all the trestles last fall. After having the planks for the table top kiln dried, I milled them to fit through my surfacer planer, planed the glue faces on my jointer planer, and glued them together with biscuit joinery. The last step before leaving on this trip was a little preliminary sanding.

When I return, I'll cut the blank to length, fill any voids with a mixture of epoxy & sawdust, and finish sanding it smooth. Finally, I'll apply a few coats of polyurethane. Once the finish is cured, I'll temporarily attach the trestles.

I still have to take the bench planks to another wood shop in Thomasville, GA for surface planing because they're too wide for my planer. Then I'll finish them through the same steps as above. Blessings y'all...

I'm in the middle of building a live edge dining table, and matching benches for my sister. She had a large, dead red oak tree cut down on her farm last year, and saved a 28" diameter log that was about 9' long. I brought the log to my local sawyer, and had it milled into planks. Pictured are the planks I intend to use for the bench seats. My sawyer also harvests sunken logs from a local river. He gave me enough boards cut from one of those old pine logs to build the trestle structures for the table & benches. Pictured are the table trestles before stain, and the bench trestles after stain. The idea of the stain is to help the heart pine trestles better match the red oak color. I believe that the stain has also given the trestles a more aged appearance, which is welcome in my view. I've not asked, but I expect the sunken log from which the trestles came is likely a century old or so. I'll post more as the project progresses. I still need to select the planks for the table, and get all the planks into my sawyer's kiln to be fully dried. Enjoy...

This is my second bench/coffee table featuring the waterfall effect, and dovetail joinery. There's even a little live edge. I made it from a southern yellow pine plank that I harvested from the sawmill scrap pile down the road from my home. Icut all thedovetailsby hand with a Japanese style pull saw, or nokogiri. This bench is made from wood milled from a century old pecan tree log. I had the tree removed for a client whose property was located in downtown Monticello, FL. I had made a similar bench/coffee table in a waterfall style using a plank from the same log. I like the waterfall effect, and live edge wood. But, I wanted to make a piece using dovetail joinery. This is actually the first waterfall table I made. I used some mottled hickory that was milled from logs taken from a tree removed decades ago from a friend's yard in Jacksonville, FL. I built these two benches recently using pecan wood. The two slabs were milled from the same log that I harvested from a century old tree I had removed for a client in Monticello, FL. The two slabs were adjacent to each other, and cut from the center of the log. So, they're mirror images of each other. And, the two benches are thus very similar.

I built the first bench with mitered corners to produce a waterfall effect where the top transitions to the legs.

I built the second bench using a combination of mitered corners, and dovetail joinery. That combination preserves some of the waterfall effect, and adds the structure & visual interest of the dovetails.

I'm interested in your opinion. If you prefer one or the other, please tell me which one you like better. Thanks, and blessings...

A couple of years ago I had some century old pecan trees removed for a client in Monticello, FL. I salvaged a log from one of the upper branches, and had it milled into boards. The he boards have been stored in my trailer or shop since then. I finally decided to make a waterfall style coffee table/bench, and this is what I produced. I could have taken it to a craftsman in Thomasville, GA and had the surface planed smooth. But, since I intended to leave the live edges intact, I decided to aggressively sand the surfaces, and leave some of the saw marks, and wavy-ness. It's 57 1/2" long and the nominal width is 19 1/2". I originally intended to sell it, but I liked the finished liece enough to keep it. I'll make another similar piece soon. But, the joinery will be a hybrid of waterfall, and dovetail. I've already made a test piece to insure my plan has merit. Thankfully, it does. The next piece should be for sale. Blessings y'all...
