10 Birders gathered on a cloudy, humid morning to explore the grounds and road. We totaled 31 species during the walk. The stars of the day were the Hummingbirds and the mimics. They were literally everywhere. It was a slow day for warblers with only three species. Common Yellowthroat, Magnolia and Chestnut-sided were seen but only brief glimpses of each, making ID difficult. Lots of great conversation and plant photo ops too. We even tasted the seeds of the Touch-me-Nots and the Lotus pods along the way.
When most folks had departed, and I had ended the ebird checklist for the walk, the raptors and vultures must have decided it was time to lift off. We tallied two more species and five more raptors during the 30 minute post-walk chit chat. All raptors were high and headed south.
