SPOTLIGHT 💡

This stunning piece is an antique American Federal or Empire style mahogany drop-leaf two-drawer work or sewing table, featuring an ornately carved pedestal base with claw feet.

The pedestal features acanthus leaf or paw carvings typical of 19th-century cabinetmaking.

The design characteristics are indicative of the American Empire period, which dates from approximately 1820 to 1840.

The specific combination of features that points to this early 19th century timeframe includes, the heavily carved pedestal base, the thick center support detailed with acanthus leaves and ending in prominent claw feet, which became highly popular in America during the 1820s and 1830s.

This style of two-drawer drop-leaf unit was commonly referred to as a "sewing table" or "work table" during this era.

It is constructed from mahogany, which was the premium wood of choice for fine furniture makers during the American Empire period.

Stop in and see it at Nan'stiques - Booth 25 at Antiques Alley/Stillwater Antiques Center located in Greenville, Rhode Island.

This is an antique Willcox & Gibbs Chain-Stitch Sewing Machine from the late 19th century. The serial number on the machine dates it to 1880.

This portable model features a distinct curved cast-iron body with gilt floral decals and a silver-plated needle plate.

It uses a single-thread chain-stitch mechanism instead of a standard bobbin.

The gilt decals are still quite vibrant and the machine is in it's original condition.

This 146 year old machine still works and can be used as either or both a functional or ornamental piece.

Come see it at Booth 25 in Antiques Alley/Stillwater Antiques Center.

SPOTLIGHT 💡

These pieces are vintage mid 20th-century Chinese mixed media watercolor painting on textured cork paper.

Each depicts a classic shinu (traditional beautiful woman) standing in a garden setting flanked by blooming plum blossoms and green bamboo stalks.

These are hand painted using watercolor and ink overlaying a thin, gold-toned textured cork paper base. This specific technique was highly popular for mid century export art.

These stunning pieces of artwork feature a stylized calligraphic signature along with a red artist's seal (stamp) in the lower left corner.

They are framed in ornate, multi-tiered gilded wood frames with a linen fabric matting border.

Paintings from this specific production line and era were distributed widely by art importers (such as Marlin Art) and are highly collectible today as mid-century Hollywood Regency or Asian Chinoiserie decor.
