This girl is home! I slept 10 hours straight. And there will likely be a nap today. But there will be dancing.

On a cold afternoon in the Black Belt, the quilt frame came down from the ceiling on its ropes, and every woman in the house pulled up a chair with a threaded needle and settled in for the day. 🧵

Nothing went to waste in those houses. Worn out shirts, flour sacks, the good parts of a dress that had finally given out, all of it went into a scrap bag and waited for winter. When the fields were resting and the weather kept everybody indoors, the women pieced those scraps into tops in patterns their own mothers had taught them, and then the real work began, stitching the top, the batting, and the backing into one warm whole around a big wooden frame. 🪡

A quilting was as much a gathering as a chore. Neighbors and kinfolk came, needles flashed, and the talk ran from sunup gossip to hard counsel to plain foolishness that had the whole room laughing. Children played underneath the frame in a little tent of hanging cloth, listening to grown women talk the way children always do, soaking up more than the grown folks knew. By the time the light failed, there was a finished quilt to show for it, and it would keep a family warm for years. 🔥

Those quilts were not bought and they were not fancy, but they carried a whole family's history in their scraps, a piece of this dress and that shirt sewn into something lasting. When you sleep under a quilt made by hands that loved you, you are covered by more than cloth. Down in the Black Belt, the women knew that, and they stitched it into every seam.
