On this day (March 2nd) in 1836, Texas declared its independence from Mexico and declared itself a Republic.📜

Here are a few fast facts about our independence and the wonderful state that we call home!

✅ Six nations have controlled parts or all of Texas at some point: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and the United States of America.

✅ Only one of the original five copies of the Texas Declaration of Independence remains; it now resides in the Texas State Archives in Austin.

✅ The men defending the Alamo never knew that Texas had declared independence.

✅ Only two of the 59 who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, – Jose Francisco Ruiz and Jose Antonio Navarro – were native Texans.

✅ In 1836, Sam Houston became the first president of the of Republic Texas.

✅ The Republic of Texas lasted nine years, eleven months, and seventeen days

Like this 1808 India 10Cash coin!

This coin was part of the cargo of the Admiral Gardner, a British East India Company ship that wrecked during a storm ⛈️ near London in 1809.

The coin stayed at the bottom of the English Channel in a sealed barrel along with 28,000 pieces for nearly 200 years before it was discovered in the 1980s.
