I am amazed at the red hematite coating this Indian amethyst. The hematite grew free from the crystal face. You can feel the ridges with your fingers!!

This specimen has some dramatic energy. The brick red chalcedony contrasts beautifully with the pastel peach stilbite. And oh how it ✨ sparkles! If Auntie Mame were a specimen, this would be her 💅

It's time for another edition of, Rock Trivia!

Today's episode: Uraninite inside a cloud chamber!

As soon as I found that we had acquired several radioactive specimens in some flats we had ordered, I immediately knew I wanted to build a cloud chamber for them! This is uraninite, which I have placed inside of the cloud chamber. What you are seeing is the radioactive decay of the uranium ore. As uraninite decays, it releases mostly alpha and beta particles (with a hand full of gamma rays for good measure). As these particles are shot off of the specimen, they travel through a layer of supersaturated isopropyl alcohol which ionizes the air, giving the alcohol v***r a place to condense onto. and that condensed isopropyl alcohol are those white steaks that are shooting out from the uraninite in the middle! Pretty cool, right!

I can't promise this isn't pulled from a break room refrigerator, but the tag reads: fluorite, mordenite, and prehnite on chalcedony. Allegedly, the balls are fluorite, not mold 🤷‍♀️
