This time of year is the peak of migration for Ruby- crowned and Golden-crowned kinglets. These are among the smallest perching birds, with a weight the same as two pennies. Fueled only by insects, you can see them as they flutter about on the branches in search of food. Many times, their crown color does not show, but they are easily told apart as the Ruby-crowned is very plain whereas the Golden-crowned has a distinctive face pattern.

From 1928 to 1972, Captain J. P. “Perk” Perkins sailed the Great Lakes onboard freighters that carried ore and other cargo between Lake Superior and Lake Erie. Perk had a unique passion for birds. For most of his life as a mariner, Perk recorded the migratory birds that sought shelter on his ships.

Migration Alert: Over 443 million birds are forecast to fly across the East Coast and eastern Midwest tonight. To help birds make their journey safely, turn off all off all nonessential lights from 11 PM to 6 AM to keep them from becoming disoriented. Make windows safer with bird-friendly treatments to prevent collisions. More than a billion birds die in glass collisions every year. Giving back is at the core of Solemate Socks. In addition to donating hundreds of thousands of socks to those in need, they wanted to find a way to give back even more...

The socks in the Give Back collection were specifically designed with some amazing non-profit organizations in mind. A portion of the proceeds from each pair of socks is donated to a corresponding non-profit that specializes in a field doing great work in their community.✨

Winter Wrens migrate this month in great numbers. Their very short and arguably cute tail is a good field mark to tell them apart from the House Wren that we are used to seeing in the breeding season.

Sunday was a perfect day to do the end of season clean out of the Bluebird Houses we donated at Belle Isle State Park. Each of the eight nest boxes had the start of a nest with pieces of dried grass as evidence.

Two had complete nests with white feathers added - a sign that Tree Swallows had used them to raise their broods.

We look forward to welcoming the Tree Swallows back next Spring and our fingers are crossed for Bluebirds.

Many backyard birds are clever food hiders, or “cachers,” storing seeds, nuts and even insects in tree crevices, under bark or in the ground to eat later! 🌳🥜 These smart birds use landmarks, the sun and even each other to keep track of their stashes, helping them survive tough winters and busy seasons. ❄️☀️ Watching them work is like seeing a tiny treasure hunt happen in your backyard! 🔍✨

The windows in our homes and offices can be hazardous for birds. Birds cannot readily distinguish the presence of a pane of transparent glass from an unobstructed space or passageway and often fly into window panes causing injury or death. Click here to learn more: www.wbu.com/window-strikes

In the Northern Hemisphere, the First Day of Autumn is Tuesday, September 22. That's when the length of day and night are almost the same. Be sure your feeders are ready for some hungry birds that are either preparing or recharging for the longer nights.

The Blue Jay shown is an example of a North American bird working hard to find the additional calories needed to make it through autumn's longer hours of darkness. Which birds are visiting your backyard this season? Share in the comments.
