Can I prune my hydrangeas in the fall? 🤔 ⬇️
Unless you're removing dead, diseased, or dying sections, the answer is no! Hydrangeas that bloom on old wood, like mophead, oakleaf, and mountain, should be pruned only to remove dead wood or spent blooms. Panicle or smooth hydrangeas, on the other hand, can be pruned back hard in early spring.
No pruning:
❌ Hydrangea Macophylla (Mophead)
❌ Hydrangea Serrata (Mountain)
❌ Hydrangea Quercifolia (Oakleaf)
Prune in spring:
✅ Hydrangea Paniculata (Panicle)
✅ Hydrangea Arborescens (Smooth)
