In February 1944, an incredible story began when an American soldier stumbled upon Smoky, a fully grown Yorkie, in an abandoned foxhole deep within the New Guinea jungle. Initially, it was believed she belonged to the Japanese, but after some surprising linguistic revelations (she didn't understand commands in Japanese or English), Smoky's fate took a fascinating turn. She was sold for two Australian pounds, allowing her seller to return to a poker game. That's when Corporal William A. Wynne of Cleveland, Ohio, became her proud owner.

Over the next two years, Smoky accompanied Wynne through the trials of war, enduring the jungle conditions of New Guinea, the Rock Islands, and the equatorial heat and humidity in tents. Despite the primitive circumstances and lack of specialized care, Smoky never fell ill. She even survived air raids, a typhoon, and an astonishing parachute descent from 30 feet in the air, using a parachute tailored just for her. Smoky's heroics weren't confined to companionship; her tricks also aided engineers in constructing a vital airbase in Luzon.

After the war, Smoky and Wynne's story captivated the nation. They traveled the world, showcasing Smoky's incredible talents, including walking a tightrope while blindfolded. Smoky entertained millions and brought smiles to veterans' hospitals. Her legacy lives on with a bronze sculpture unveiled in her honor, a tribute to "Smoky, the Yorkie Doodle Dandy, and the Dogs of All Wars." This remarkable Yorkie left an indelible mark on history and our hearts. 🐾🇺🇸
