SUPPRESSOR UPDATE — COLORADO
There’s been a lot of talk surrounding the recent federal court ruling involving suppressors, and understandably, a lot of questions about what it actually means for Colorado.
The biggest takeaway: nothing changes overnight for Colorado suppressor buyers.
The federal court ruled that certain NFA registration requirements can no longer be justified solely through the federal government’s taxing authority now that the suppressor transfer tax is $0. The DOJ did not obtain an additional stay, and the administration has reportedly indicated that it does not plan to appeal.
So, does that mean you can walk into Windage Weaponry, buy a suppressor, and take it home the same day?
Not in Colorado — at least not yet.
Colorado has its own law addressing suppressors under C.R.S. § 18-12-102. Because of that law, along with the current scope of the federal court’s injunction, suppressor transfers in Colorado are still being processed through the ATF Form 4 system.
What does that mean for you today?
✅ Suppressor transfer tax: $0
✅ ATF Form 4: Still required in Colorado and 14 other states
✅ ATF approval: Still required before you take your suppressor home
❌ Same-day suppressor transfers: Not available in Colorado yet
There are still several legal pieces that have to fall into place before the process changes here in Colorado. We’re following those developments closely and will pass along updates as we get solid information.
For now, it’s business as usual — just without the $200 tax.
