I need to talk about the absolute fever dream that was 1987 toy marketing…

Because some executives at Hasbro gathered in a boardroom and said:

“What if Mad Max…but everyone is fighting over oxygen?”

And instead of being escorted from the building, they were handed a budget.

Friends…

The official storyline was that evil dictators called the Tyrants of Wind had seized control of ALL THE AIR.

Not land.

Not money.

Not oil.

AIR.

The thing literally surrounding everyone.

And the heroes??? A group called the Air Raiders who launched a full scale rebellion using air powered missiles, air powered vehicles, air powered bases, air powered everything.

The entire franchise was basically:

“Give me liberty or give me…breathing.”

Meanwhile kids were just sitting cross legged on the living room carpet like:

“Yes. This seems completely reasonable.”

Also…can we appreciate that every vehicle looked like it was designed by someone who had just watched Star Wars, drank six cans of Tab, and hadn’t slept since Tuesday???

The colors are aggressive.

The names are aggressive.

The concept is aggressively ridiculous.

And honestly???

That’s exactly why I love vintage toys.

Nobody was worried about realism…

They just looked directly at a pile of plastic and said:

“What if oxygen became political?”

10/10.
No notes.
Would absolutely join the air rebellion. 🤷‍♀️

I swear vintage Fisher-Price catalogs are the gateway drug to nostalgia.

One minute you’re minding your own business…

The next minute you’re 47 pages deep into a 1966 parents guide thinking:

“You know what??? Maybe the tiny wooden duck was enough.”

No flashing lights.
No apps.
No Bluetooth.
No toy demanding a firmware update before it can disappoint your child.

Just wood.
Paint.
Wheels.
And an absolutely unreasonable amount of confidence.

Meanwhile modern toys need WiFi, a charging cable, a user agreement, and apparently a degree in troubleshooting.

I don’t know if things were actually simpler in 1966…

But I do know that every time I flip through one of these old catalogs, I suddenly develop a strong urge to sit on an avocado-green couch and discuss the merits of a pull-along dog.

And honestly???

That’s probably enough internet for today. 🤷‍♀️

I need everyone to understand that this isn't concept art.

This isn't a movie prop.

This isn't something a guy built in his garage last week and posted on YouTube.

This was a REAL PRODUCT...

In 1986.

A 16 foot remote controlled flying saucer filled with helium that hovered over crowds, carried cameras, launched through dry ice, and was apparently flown by Prince Charles.

The best part???

The brochure says:

"People respond when they see the HYSTAR."

Yeah.

No s**t, Gary.

It's a flying UFO.

I'd respond too.

And before anyone asks if this thing actually flew...

It did.

One of the coolest pieces of footage I've found is in a video from Andre T. on YouTube (around the 7-minute mark), where you can actually watch the HYSTAR cruising around Expo 86 like the future showed up 40 years early.

The 1980s really woke up every morning and chose absolute nonsense.

And honestly???

I miss that level of commitment.

I need everyone to gather around because this is a TWO-FOR-ONE nostalgia assault and frankly I was not emotionally prepared…

On one hand:

1996 Barbie Collectibles…

Back when Barbie was serving wealth, drama, and completely unrealistic expectations for formalwear.

Escada Barbie??? Giving rich aunt with opinions energy.

Moon Goddess Barbie??? Beautifully unnecessary. Completely dramatic. Absolutely awesome.

Star Trek Barbie??? Because Mattel said:

“What if Barbie…but intergalactic.”

But ALSO…

Can we talk about the fact this came from a Spiegel catalog???

In case you’re under 35, let me explain:

Before doomscrolling, targeted ads, and 47 browser tabs full of things you swear you’re only “thinking about buying”…

There were catalogs.

Thick, dangerous little books of temptation arriving at your house like:

“Hey girl…wanna financially ruin yourself from the comfort of your recliner???”

And Spiegel??? Ohhhh she was fancy.

Founded in the 1800s (because apparently people have always enjoyed shopping for things they absolutely didn’t need), Spiegel eventually said:

“Let’s sell literally everything.”

Fashion. Furniture. Home stuff.

And somehow…

Barbie.

Then after surviving world wars, decades of retail chaos, economic meltdowns, and generations of moms aggressively circling pages…

Spiegel quietly vanished into the retail void and abruptly shut its’ doors around 2019/2020 after financial problems.

Meanwhile Barbie???

Still thriving.
Still overdressed.
Still emotionally unaffected by economic collapse.

Honestly???

Barbie outlived the catalog.

That feels weirdly on brand…

Listen…

Kids today will NEVER understand the emotional rollercoaster of taking 24 photos…waiting approximately 7 to 46 business years for them to get developed…only to discover:

✨ Every single picture was absolute garbage ✨

Blurry???
Dark???
Too bright???
Random ghost child floating in the background because your camera decided to DOUBLE EXPOSE like it was summoning Victorian spirits???

PERFECT. MEMORY PRESERVED. 💅

And don’t even get me started on red eye…

Nothing says “cherished family moment” like your aunt looking mildly possessed in front of a potato salad.

Meanwhile our parents were over there absolutely raw do***ng photography like:

“Eh. Buy the green Fuji box. Godspeed.”

No previews.
No deleting.
No editing.

Just vibes, confusion, and a Walgreens envelope full of disappointment.

Honestly? The fact any of us have childhood memories documented at all feels miraculous. 🤷‍♀️

06/12/2026

I don’t care what anybody says…

The 80s were out here raising kids like:

“You’ll either become resilient or incredibly interesting in therapy.” 🇺🇸💀

Because WHY were toy aisles basically tiny military supply depots???

Not a coloring book.
Not emotional regulation.
Not a sensory bin.

No.

Here’s an anti-aircraft gun, a flamethrower, a shirtless man built like unpaid alimony, and an evil villain headquarters with a trap door.

FOR AGES: YES.

And somehow every commercial had the same energy:

✨ Explosions
✨ Aggressive synth music
✨ One kid dramatically diving behind a couch

Meanwhile our parents were just chain smoking nearby like:

“Be home before dark.”

Honestly???

The 80s really said:

“Here’s a flamethrower, a shirtless action hero, and unresolved emotional damage. Good luck out there, champ.” 💀

And people wonder why our generation has trust issues 🤷‍♀️

I would like to formally apologize for misleading everyone all these years…Because I have been walking among you like so...

I would like to formally apologize for misleading everyone all these years…

Because I have been walking among you like some kind of average civilian when in reality:

I am a Super Official Card-Carrying Member of the Burger King Kids Club. 👑🍔

That’s right.

Not a member…

A “SUPER OFFICIAL” member.

Please direct all future correspondence to me with the respect this level of fast food prestige deserves.

For the younger crowd who missed this absolutely elite era of civilization: the Burger King Kids Club was basically the 90s version of social status mixed with cholesterol and unearned confidence. You’d sign up, get mail, birthday perks, coupons, and most importantly…

A FREE birthday burger!!!

Which, respectfully, hit harder than therapy 🤷‍♀️

But here’s my question…

Why did my parents treat this paperwork like it was a founding historical document???

Somewhere along the way my mother must’ve looked at this and thought…

“We should probably hang onto this…You never know when Jennifer may need to prove she once held mid-level fast food influence.” 🍔

…Like this was some kind of important legal document and not evidence that I once peaked socially at age 8 over a free Whopper.

Honestly, this surviving 30+ years feels like proof my parents genuinely believed I might one day need to verify my fast food credentials during some kind of future apocalyptic suburban burger crisis. 🔥

I don’t care what anybody says…

The 1970s were DEEPLY committed to tiny real estate.

And apparently???

The Weebles had the market cornered.

Because explain to me why these little wobbley bean citizens had:

🏴‍☠️ A pirate island
🌊 A marina
🌳 A treehouse
✈️ An AIRPORT
🏕️ Multiple vacation options

Meanwhile most of us in adulthood are one unexpected bill away from emotional collapse and eating shredded cheese over the sink.

Also…I need us to discuss the actual Weebles themselves…

Because the playsets???

✨ Elite. Gorgeous. Aspirational. ✨

The Weebles???

Like someone described a human over a bad phone connection…

Less “little people.”

More “aggressively oval”…🤷‍♀️

And yet…

I kinda think if they’d been just a touch more people-y and a little less “human-shaped wobble hazard”…

Fisher-Price should’ve been VERY nervous.

Honestly, these houses were sweet. The treehouse??? The marina??? The pirate island???

I fear I would’ve been absolutely insufferable about this in 1975. 🤣

Did you have Weebles…or were you loyal to Little People??

06/02/2026

I regret to inform everyone that after reviewing the 1988 Little Tikes catalog…

We were not actually playing…

We were being quietly prepared for suburban adulthood. 😭

Because otherwise, why did Little Tikes look at a toddler and say:

“You know what this tiny person needs???”
✨ Debt simulation
✨ Domestic responsibilities
✨ Municipal labor

You’re TWO.

Here’s a lawn mower.
Go maintain the property.

You’re THREE???

Congratulations.
You now own:
🚗 A vehicle
⛽ A gas pump
🏠 A starter home
🪴 Landscaping obligations
🍽️ A fully functioning kitchen
🧹 And emotional responsibility for an entire fake household.

The Cozy Coupe???
Our first car.

No seatbelt.
No license.
No concept of consequences.

Just raw driveway aggression and vibes.

And can we discuss the fact that half this catalog was basically:

“Pretend motherhood: The Early Years”

Tiny vacuums.
Tiny kitchens.
Tiny doll strollers.

Like ma’am…I still don’t enjoy housework NOW.

Meanwhile boys got:

🚜 Tractors
🚧 Construction equipment
🔥 Giant cranes

Because apparently the 80s said:

“Girls will nurture. Boys will build infrastructure.”

Honestly though???

The chokehold these primary colors had on us…unmatched.

This wasn’t just toys.

This was childhood.

This was chaos.

This was surviving on Capri Suns, neglect, and molded plastic built strong enough to outlive civilization.

Tell me your Little Tikes core memory because I KNOW somebody in here drove a Cozy Coupe like they had unpaid taxes and three exes. 😭
