Seven-Son-Flower (Heptacodium miconioides) makes a striking specimen plant and exhibits multiple seasons of interest. Currently, its sweetly fragrant flowers are serving as a late-season nectar source. Post-bloom in October, persistent red to rosy-pink bracts will introduce a secondary display. Winter interest is provided by the exfoliating bark, with lighter brown strips peeling away to reveal other shades of brown beneath. Wanczyk Nursery carries both field-grown multistem specimens, as well as containerized single-trunk examples. This non-invasive native of China is rare and threatened in the wild due to habitat loss and is found mainly in arboreta. Consider adding this beauty to your landscape!

Our magnificent specimen of Franklin Tree (Franklinia alatamaha) has come into glorious bloom here at Wanczyk Nursery! This rare tree was discovered in the 1760s along Georgia’s Altamaha River by father and son botanists John & William Bartram, who named the tree after their friend, Benjamin Franklin. During subsequent return visits in the 1770s, seed was collected from the wild population, and seedlings and seed distributed from the Bartrams’ Philadelphia nursery. The species has been extinct in the wild since 1803. All living examples descend from those initial collections!
Franklin Tree is a late-season bloomer, generally lasting from late summer into mid-autumn. The 5-petalled white flowers have a prominent gold center, are lightly fragrant, and bear a resemblance to their cousin the Camellia. Additionally, the glossy spring and summer foliage morphs into tones of burgundy, orange, and purple in autumn. Franklinia is winter hardy in the warmer half of Zone 5 through Zone 9, grows 10-20 feet tall by 6-15 feet wide, appreciates full sun to part shade, and relishes acidic moist, but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Just in at Wanczyk Nursery, a newly delivered batch of straw, locally grown by our good friends at Niedbala Farm here in Hadley. This natural product is great for mulching vegetable beds and perennial gardens. In addition, a layer of straw will help retain soil moisture and insulates the soil as well, keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. This protects root systems and the crowns of plants from temperature extremes. As it decomposes, straw will add organic matter to the soil, enhancing soil structure and microbial activity. Stop in here at Wanczyk Nursery for some great local straw. Well even load it into your car or truck for you!
