Who needs an oily oiler? While I had replaced the gaskets on the Gorton Mill's spindle bearing oiler, it still leaked and made a mess with the 10W spindle oil. Over the last couple of evenings, I disassembled the oiler, soaked it in degreaser, allowed it to dry, and then reassembled with tacky gasket sealant and teflon pipe sealant.

The next two operations square up the boss to match its 45-degree angle followed by slotting it 5/64" (0.078"/2mm) wide by 7/32 (0.219" / 5.5mm) deep. The sides of the boss were machined with a 1/8" end mill. The slot, a 1/16".







Turn the vise 45-degrees, and now where'd that reference point go?  Another decision for this prototype batch was needed...

Turn the vise 45-degrees, and now where'd that reference point go? Another decision for this prototype batch was needed regarding the boss that holds the tiny fuel regulator needle valve in position. In order to work with the original castings, I "rotated" the boss and its slot from 30-degrees to 45. This was a compromise needed to align one edge of the slot with the center of the fuel regulator -- but first, we need to "locate" the mixer body under the mill spindle.

Next up was more of a challenge than I expected. Locating the four holes to be drilled, reamed and tapped so that the holes would end up near the centers of the bosses in the castings took more than an hour for each of the four castings. The new castings should make this task much easier.

The new mixer design simplifies the machining while improving both fuel and air flow. It also includes a replaceable venturi to help with tuning for more reliable running. First, we'll machine the mixer bodies from the 4 castings shown in the foreground. Hopefully, soon we'll be able to see how it works as well.

Here's a short video showing one of the main reasons I've wanted to get the Gorton Mill running. Cutting a 1/4" long, 5/32 deep, by 1/16" wide slot in a miniature carburetor with a 1/16" diameter end mill running at 4,000rpm. This also shows how the micrometer depth stop works for quickly advancing for each 0.010" deep cut. Enjoy!
