Have you ever seen this? ZZ plants (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) actually flower, though it’s a rare occurrence that requires optimal care to achieve!

ZZ plants are marketed as “low-maintenance” and “low-light” plants, making them a popular choice for new plant parents. It is true that ZZ plants are easy to care for, but that’s not the whole truth. Because they are resilient, they can easily tolerate neglect and insufficient lighting. But that same toughness keeps them in energy-conservation mode - merely surviving, not thriving!

To increase your chances of seeing your ZZ plant bloom, here are some key elements to prioritize:

💡Light: Move it out of the dark! ZZ plants need 6 to 8 hours of bright, filtered sunlight daily to shift from survival mode to reproductive mode.

💧Soil & Watering: Make sure your substrate is quick-draining and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Their rhizomes store water, even when the soil looks dry.

🌡️Temperature: ZZ plants prefer stable warmth, ideally between 65-75°F, and should be kept away from cold drafts or heating vents.

💩 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength once a month during the spring and summer growing season. A formula with slightly higher phosphorus (the “P” in the NPK number) will help encourage flowering.

👵🏻 Maturity: Most ZZ plants won’t flower until they’re 3-5 years old, some even longer, and have a well-established root system and thick underground rhizomes. Patience is key!

So, has your ZZ plant ever bloomed? In all our years of plant care, this is the first time we’ve witnessed it. Naturally, we were both surprised and enormously proud!🥹

Many hands make light work…

Keeping Dragonfly running smoothly is no small feat. Thankfully, we have a team that works their tushies off to ensure the store looks its best, the plants are healthy, and our customers are well taken care of. In honor of Labor Day, we want to give a special shout out to the plant crew, the interns, and, of course, the kitties that show up and give their best every day. Thank you for your dedication and, most importantly, thanks for putting up with us. If we don’t tell you enough, we couldn’t do this without you! 🇺🇸💪

We owe a heartfelt apology to our tiny feathered friends! We failed to acknowledge World Hummingbird Day yesterday. To make amends, we’re dropping some insider knowledge on hummingbird-approved, nectar-rich native plant options that we stock at Dragonfly. All of our natives are grown locally and sustainably by our friends at Sunset Farmstead without the use of insecticides or fungicides. These plants are great options to help our local hummingbirds prepare for their long and arduous fall migration.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds’ southern migration from NJ peaks this month, heading to their wintering grounds in Mexico and Central America. This impressive journey includes a non-stop flight straight across the Gulf of Mexico. That’s up to 600 miles of open water, taking roughly 18-22 hours to cross in a single flight! Before embarking on this dangerous adventure, the birds undergo a remarkable transformation, doubling their body fat through a period of intense feeding known as ‘hyperphagia’. This fat reserve provides the necessary energy and endurance to fuel their incredible migration.
