💙 An Important Update About Lapis Lazuli 💙

Once our current selection of lapis lazuli is gone, Between the Worlds will no longer be carrying or restocking it.

Afghanistan has long been the world’s principal source of high-quality lapis lazuli. Today, the country’s mining industry generates revenue for the Taliban administration, and lapis itself has a documented history of helping fund the Taliban and other armed groups.

While lapis can be found in a few other parts of the world, reliably tracing the stones available through the retail supply chain—and ensuring they have no connection to Afghanistan—is extremely difficult. For that reason, we have made the decision not to purchase any more.

The Taliban is formally designated as a terrorist organization by some governments and remains subject to international sanctions. Regardless of labels, we cannot ignore its severe human-rights abuses—particularly the systematic removal of women and girls from education, employment, and public life. Afghanistan remains the only country in the world where girls and women are forbidden from attending secondary school and higher education.

The lapis currently in our shop was purchased before we made this decision. Once those remaining pieces are gone, they are gone.

At Between the Worlds, we believe the products we carry should reflect our values. We cannot, in good conscience, knowingly direct future purchasing dollars toward a supply chain that may financially benefit a regime responsible for such profound oppression.
