🚨 HFR NEW WORLD SCREWWORM UPDATE | TEXAS
📅 September 4, 2026

It’s time for another New World Screwworm update, and this one includes both new cases and some encouraging progress with zone releases.

According to our updated HFR tracker, 3 animal cases are currently ACTIVE in Texas:

🔴 Aug. 16 — Val Verde County — Sheep — Zone 19
🔴 Aug. 25 — Val Verde County — Goats — Zone 19.A
🔴 Aug. 31 — Crockett County — Dog — Zone 20

The Aug. 5 Terrell County sheep case has now moved to INACTIVE status.

🟢 ALSO IMPORTANT: ZONES ARE BEGINNING TO BE RELEASED

This is a significant development. USDA approved the first releases of Texas NWS infested zones on Aug. 31, and TAHC has continued releasing additional areas as conditions are met.

As of Sept. 4, TAHC lists releases involving areas of Gillespie, Kerr, Kimble, La Salle, Webb, Coke, Tom Green, Uvalde, Zavala, Schleicher and Sutton Counties. However, portions of several of these counties may still fall under other active zones, so always check the current TAHC map before moving animals.

⚠️ Movement restrictions remain in effect in portions of Texas. Warm-blooded animals moving out of an active infested zone require authorization/inspection and the appropriate NWS Movement/Treatment certificate.

🪰 CONTINUE TO INSPECT • PREVENT • TREAT • REPORT

Pay especially close attention to fresh wounds, newborn navels, castration sites, injuries and other openings in the skin. New World Screwworm can affect livestock, pets and wildlife.

USDA also reports that surveillance remains extensive: more than 6,600 wild animals across 28 species have been examined in Texas with no evidence of NWS, and NWS-specific trapping along the southern border has produced no wild NWS fly detections to date.
