Friday Info Dump: Why the Coffee Beans?
We talked about it. You've probably seen it:
A glass of sambuca.
Three coffee beans.
Maybe even a little fire. 🔥
But why?
The three coffee beans traditionally represent health, happiness, and prosperity.
And they're not just there for decoration.
Coffee and sambuca actually make a pretty interesting flavor combination. The bitterness and roasted character of coffee help balance sambuca's sweetness, while the anise flavor adds a completely different aromatic layer.
But coffee beans aren't just for sambuca. ☕
Here are a few other ways to put those little beans to work behind the bar:
Infuse spirits — Add whole coffee beans to vodka, rum, bourbon, or other spirits for a rich coffee flavor without needing to brew anything.
Garnish cocktails — A few beans can add aroma and a little visual interest to espresso martinis, White Russians, coffee cocktails, and dessert drinks.
Pair with citrus — Coffee and orange are surprisingly good friends. Try coffee beans with orange-forward cocktails or use them alongside an orange garnish.
Bring out chocolate — Coffee can intensify chocolate flavors, making beans a natural pairing for chocolate-based cocktails.
Add aroma — Lightly warming coffee beans releases those roasted aromas, which can make the experience of a cocktail even more interesting.
And one more tip:
Whole coffee beans are generally better for infusing than ground coffee. They're easier to strain out and give you more control over how much coffee flavor you're adding.
So the next time you're making a cocktail and think, “It needs… something,” don't overlook the coffee beans sitting in your kitchen.
They might be exactly what you're looking for.
What cocktail would YOU try adding coffee beans to?
