9 August 1945, three days after Hiroshima, the B-29 Bockscar, commanded by Major Charles W. Sweeney, dropped the “Fat Man” over Nagasaki. Bockscar was one of the specially modified “Silverplate” about 6,000 lb lighter than standard aircraft, stripped of armor and fitted with modified bomb bays and release systems to carry nuclear weapons. The attack became the second—and, to date, last—use of a nuclear weapon in warfare.

27 July 1976, Majors Adolphus H. Bledsoe, Jr. and John T. Fuller flew the Lockheed SR-71A (Tail 61-7958) to an insane 2,092.29 mph (3,367.22 km/h), shattering the FAI Absolute World Record Speed!
As if that wasn't enough, just 24 hours later, the exact same jet broke records again—hitting 85,068 feet and setting a new absolute speed record of 2,193.17 mph. All six crew members earned the prestigious Henry De La Vaulx Medal for pushing the absolute limits of flight.
Today, only 32 of these engineering masterpieces exist, and #61-7958 rests proudly at the Museum of Aviation in Warner-Robins, Georgia.

18 April 1952 — The Convair YB-60 took to the skies for the first time… and quietly lost the race.

Built from a B-36 with swept wings and 8 jet engines, it promised bigger payloads and lower cost than the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress. But reality hit fast — it was slower, less efficient, and outdated before it even matured.

After just 66 flight hours, the program was cancelled. Two prototypes… both scrapped.

A powerful reminder: in aviation, performance always wins.
