Words that locals take personally when you pronounce them wrong:
• Sauna
• Pasty

Get the pronunciation right… or we might question whether you’re really from the U.P.

Are there any others?

A little piece of Finland stopped by Hancock!

Finnish news outlet Ilta-Sanomat recently visited Michigan’s Copper Country for a feature on City of Hancock—often called the most Finnish city in the United States and a true heart of Finnish America.

Their visit included a stop at our very own and a wonderful interview with -Lahja Belapavlovich, along with a visit across the bridge to the beloved Suomi Restaurant in Houghton.

Thank you, Ilta-Sanomat, for helping bridge Finland and Finnish America—and for shining a light on this special corner of the country where Finnish heritage is not only preserved, but lived.

We’re proud that Finlandia Foundation’s Finnish American Heritage Center can help keep that culture, history, and connection alive for generations to come.
