The first Oktoberfest made its way from Munich to America in 1961 - 65 years ago!

The first major American Oktoberfest was held in La Crosse, Wisconsin, October 13–15, 1961. It was inspired directly by Munich’s Oktoberfest and was developed as a community festival with the help of the G. Heileman Brewing Company and the local Chamber of Commerce.

German-American communities had smaller Oktoberfest-style celebrations before 1961, but La Crosse’s event is the first major, established American Oktoberfest.

Fast-forward 65 years, and Oktoberfest has become a beloved fall tradition, with hundreds of celebrations taking place across the U.S. every year!

Other than the original in Munich, I have attended Oktoberfests in Hawaii and Texas.
