They are essentially divided into two categories – salvage items and job-outs. Salvage merchandise consists of customer returns, floor damages and samples. Due to this mixed assortment, some items may be damaged – however damageable does not always mean unsellable. This will depend on the product and the damage. That said – the majority will not be damaged. The second category of closeout merchandise is job-outs. This category identifies items that were already on a retail floor somewhere and did not sell. As a result, their cost has been reduced for a quick sell to another retailer and ultimately, to a new consumer audience. Overstocks and Closeouts
Designers and manufacturers of apparel are good examples of how the overstock market works. They manufacture samples of their seasonal line to be used in selling, but it often costs less to manufacture in large volume, so the entire line might be produced in expectation of selling. Merchandise that isn't bought by store buyers is left over and must be sold to reclaim the manufacturer's investment, and if the cost of manufacture is low enough, the liquidation price can cover those costs or even result in a small profit. Closeouts are similar. They are lines of merchandise that have been discontinued. Some manufacturers sell directly to discount resellers like TBW.
