This is not a learn to crochet class, but intended for those who have previously learned mosaic crochet and want help!

World Kindness Day is celebrated on November 13. When Yarnability was located in downtown Charles Town, we joined together with other small businesses to spread kindness all month long. This has been an annual event in town that supports their Main Street America small town mission to “preserve, promote, and enhance Charles Town’s historic downtown heart, focusing on its physical, social, cultural, and economic vitality.”

One of the people born and raised in Charles Town was Todd Coyle. Many people will remember Todd from Bushel & Peck or the Farmer’s Market. He was always a friendly face, and a staple in downtown serving on the city council. In 2021 the businesses took part in a Be Kind promotion to pay it forward. With a little behind the scenes organization, each of us were told who we would pay it forward to, but what we chose to do was at our own discretion.

I was given Todd at Bushel and Peck. Many days I would see Todd standing outside always wearing a hat. So, I decided I would knit him a new hat and place our targeted message of “Be Kind” across it. I don’t think Todd ever removed that hat from the moment I surprised him with it.

Sadly Todd passed away in January of this year. In memorial of Todd the city of Charles Town unveiled a mural featuring Todd smiling down on W. Washington Street as he often did from that corner of Bushel and Peck. The mural was designed by former Charles Town City Planner Rashedul Deepon. The image of Todd not only features that familiar face, but the Be Kind hat he so proudly wore everyday.

In honor of Todd and the goal to spread kindness this November, Todd’s Be Kind Beanie knitting pattern will be available at Yarnability for Free! Stop byand pick up your copy throughout the month of November.

Julie is back at Yarnability to share her mosaic magic!

This time she joins us to use mosaic crochet to create this classic beanie with a zig zag pattern. Worked in the ever so popular, squishy, soft, Malabrigo Rios!

Students should be comfortable with basic crochet terms and the ability to work a chain, single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch Independently.

Class Dates/Times: Sunday October 11 at 10am-12pm

Yarn: 2 skeins 100 grams of worsted weight yarn in 2 colors (we love Malabrigo Rios) - to be purchased at Yarnability.

Hook: 5.0mm US Size H hook

Notions: locking stitch markers, scissors, large eye yarn/darning needle

Class Fee: $35 includes:

2 hours of instruction
personal copy of the pattern for beanie/hat

HOMEWORK: Purchase Yarn prior to class and complete the brim so you are ready to start the mosaic in class.

The hat begins at the brim. Chain 13 stitches. Turn
Row 1: sc in the back bump of the 2nd st from hook, sc in each back bump to the end, turn (12 sts)
Row 2: ch1, scblo in each st to end, turn (12 sts)
Repeat row 2 until you have 72 rows.
