Meet Taj, Residence Hall Director at the new UConn dorms on Pratt Street!
What was your first impression of Pratt Street?
My first impression was that Pratt Street felt vibrant, historic, and full of character. I was excited about our students living in the heart of downtown Hartford and having opportunities to connect with the city beyond the classroom.
What does a Residence Hall Director do day to day?
A Residence Hall Director helps create a safe, welcoming, and supportive living environment for students. My day can include supervising Resident Assistants, supporting residents, addressing concerns, responding to emergencies, managing conduct matters, planning community-building initiatives, and collaborating with campus and community partners. No two days are ever exactly the same!
Any spots on the street you’re drawn to already?
I’m drawn to the outdoor seating areas and the local restaurants and businesses along the street. I enjoy spaces where I can grab something to eat, connect with people, and take in the energy of downtown Hartford. My current favorites are Sunberry, Bloom, Hartford Prints and Refuge Tattoo.
What do you want the Pratt Street community to know about the new residents?
Our students are excited to become part of the Pratt Street community. They bring diverse experiences, talents, and ideas, and I hope they will support local businesses, build positive relationships with their neighbors, and contribute to the energy of the area.
Advice for an incoming freshman moving in?
Be open to the experience. Introduce yourself to your neighbors, attend programs, explore Hartford, ask for help when you need it, and take advantage of opportunities outside your comfort zone. Your first year is about more than academics, it is also about discovering who you are and finding your community.
What do you want people to know about you?
I want people to know that I genuinely care about students and the communities I serve. I’m approachable, supportive, and always willing to listen. I also love bringing people together and creating spaces where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and connected.
